I finally pulled away from Dallas. Her and my friends looked on in amazement. "Wow..." She said."I cannot believe you just did that." Jackie added.
Melissa held her hand up. "High five!"
I happily did so, flashing Dallas a little smirk. "So, you wanna blow this pop stand or what?"
She returned my smirk, sticking her arm out. "You got it, gorgeous."
I looped my arm through hers, letting her lead me out of the mall.
"So, where would you like to go?" She asked.
I looked around the city, a million different possibilities surrounded us. "At this point, I really don't care."
She smiled before leading me across the street. But, before we made it across, the sound of squealing brakes filled my ears. I turned just in time to see a public bus barreling right into the side of us...
Everything went black before the sound of that goddamn alarm filled my ears.
I sat up with a grown. "Why? Why!? WHY!?"
Aileen sat down next to me as I rested my head in my hands. "Because... She's not the one for you."
I looked up at her. "What do you mean?"
She sighed as she stood. "Look, I was trying to let you figure this out on your own, but clearly that's not going to happen... You're stuck in a rut, Liz... Every day of your life playing out exactly the same way. There's no love, no adventure, no... No anything... When I was assigned to you, the job description was pretty clear. I have to get you out of this endless, tedious cycle you're living in. I have to find you a reason to live. Give your life purpose. You're capable of so much and destined for greatness. But, you won't allow yourself to see it."
I looked down then, rubbing my arm. "My father used to tell me that... But, after he died, I just... I didn't know what else to do..."
She sat back down, wrapping her arm around my shoulder. "Liz, this is the universes way of telling you that you have to break free. We only have one life to live, we should enjoy it while we can... It's what your father would've wanted..."
I felt a few stray tears leaking down my cheeks. "Thank you..."
She rubbed my back. "Any time... Now, let's get a move on, or you're gonna be late."
I let her pull me up off the bed. "What difference does it make if I'm late? I'm just gonna end up dying again anyway."
"Because... If you're late, she won't see you through the crowd..." Aileen said, giving me a little push out the door.
Realization dawned on me. "Wait, you mean-"
She snapped her fingers then and suddenly I was at the kiosk again.
I looked around, slightly overwhelmed, when her voice cut through my thoughts. "Liz!?"
I jumped a little as Jackie approached. "Jesus, Jackie, you scared me."
She folded her arms over her chest, flashing me a little smirk. "Well, you shouldn't have been daydreaming about that girl."
I let out a sigh, a defeated smile playing at my lips. "I wasn't daydreaming about her..."
"Bullshit." Melissa called out, walking towards us.
I pulled her into a quick hug. "I know, I'm hot and I'm nice, but I'm not gonna ask Dallas out."
She gave me a confused look. "Why not?"
I rubbed my side. "That bus really fucking hurt."
Jackie and Melissa shared a look as Arty walked up. "Howdy, creep. Why don't you keep walking, before I fuck you up."
Her froze in place, unsure how to respond. "This is your only warning, if I ever see you anywhere near my kiosk again, I will beat you to death with your own hands, got it?"
He nodded quickly before scurrying off.
Melissa and Jackie looked on as I took a side step, right into the group of hipsters, the guy, like always, spilling his coffee on my shirt.
"Thank you." I said before waving my hands dismissively at the group.
They looked at each other as they kept walking.
"Bad morning?" Her voice called out, filling my ears and putting a smile on my face.
I turned to face her. "Actually, it's going pretty well."
She smiled a little, pulling a pack of tissues from her purse. "Here, maybe these will help."
"I doubt it... But, I appreciate the gesture." I replied.
She smiled a little wider. "Any time."
I looked into her big, beautiful eyes for the first time since that faithful Monday. "What's your name?"
She stretched her hand in my direction. "Harper."
I shook her hand. "Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Liz."
"Nice to meet you, Liz, hopefully the rest of your day will go better for you." She said.
"Well, it would... If you'd join me for breakfast?" I asked, the nerves building in my stomach.
She looked down, her cheeks turning pink. "Actually, that's why I came over... But, then I saw those kids spill coffee on you and well... I didn't wanna bother you."
I took her hand in mine, causing her to look up at me. "Trust me, you're not bothering me... Let's get out of here, I know this great place across the street."
She smiled and nodded. "Lead the way."
So, we headed outside and down the sidewalk.
Fear spread through my gut as we approached the crosswalk. The same crosswalk that led to me getting hit by a car, a bus, an ambulance, two motorcycles, and a fucking street sweeper.
I stopped at the edge of the sidewalk, squeezing Harpers hand a little tighter.
"Everything ok?" She asked.
I just nodded, lifting my foot from the curb, placing it gingerly against the asphalt.
I made sure to look both ways at least five times before finally crossing.
The other side of the street was only a few feet away. We might actually make it...
That's when I heard the sirens, turning to see a giant fire truck barreling towards us.
I let out a sigh, bracing for impact. "Here we go..."
But, at the last second, Harper pulled me to the ground, the fire truck passing us harmlessly.
Everything went quiet, all I could hear was my own breathing... Then, her voice... "Are you ok, Liz?"
I looked up into her eyes, a wave of relief washing over me. "I'm better than ok..."
She flashed me a little smile, helping me back to my feet. "That was a close one, huh?"
I let out a laugh. "Yeah... Real close..."
