Fuck Monday's. I mean seriously, fuck Monday's. It's the worst day of the week. After spending two whole days away from work, you're forced to start all over again. The monotony was enough to drive anyone mad... But, could you imagine having to relive the same Monday over and over again? Every time you wake up, it's the same Monday you fell asleep to... Or, in my case, died on...Why me..?
The sound of the alarm woke me from my peaceful slumber. The dreams of a certain regular dancing around my head. "And that's exactly where she'll stay..." I said to myself as I rolled out of bed and shut the alarm off.
After a quick shower, I grabbed my morning coffee and headed out on my walk to work.
I worked for the biggest mall in the city. Well, I didn't technically for the mall, I ran a vape kiosk inside the mall. I had to deal with hippie teenagers and burned out old men all day. It was pure hell.
Then, just like every morning, the regular would walk by. Her name was Dallas. She recently quit cigarettes and swore up and down that we had the best vape shop in the whole city. Right inside our humble mall... It was a load of shit. But, hey, it gave me a well deserved break from the hell I lived in. For those few minutes a day, I was in another world, where it was just me and the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. Well, until today that is...
"Liz!?" I heard, pulling me from my daydreams.
I turned, seeing my best friend, Jackie, standing right next to me. She worked across the walkway at a little restaurant.
"Hey, Jackie. How long have you been standing there?" I asked.
She folded her arms, a slight smirk playing at her lips. "About as long as you've been daydreaming about that girl."
I rolled my eyes. "I was not daydreaming about her."
"Bullshit." I heard, turning to see our friend, Melissa.
"Whatever." I replied stubbornly.
"Why don't you just ask her out already?" Jackie asked.
"Because, I know she's gonna say no and I have enough shit in my life as it is. I don't need the embarrassment on top of it."
Melissa laughed. "Jesus, have you ever seen yourself? You're hot and nice and she'd be stupid to say no."
I rubbed my temples. "Alright, as fun as this is, I have customers. Beat it."
They shared a chuckle as they walked off, an old man taking their place shorty after. "Howdy, good lookin', what time you get off?"
I let out a long breath as I stood. "Don't make me call security again, Arty."
Just then, a group of hipsters walked past, one of them bumping into me, spilling their micro foam espresso all over my shirt.
I spun on him. "What the hell!?"
His friends pulled out their phones and started recording me as he backed up, raising his hands. "It was an accident, no need to fly off the handle, babe."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Just, get the fuck away from me."
They scurried away as a beautiful, blonde woman walked up. "Bad morning?" She asked.
I froze. "Yeah, uh, something like that."
The woman smiled a little, pulling a pack of tissues from her purse. "Here, maybe these will help." She said.
I took them from her outstretched hand and attempted to wipe the coffee from my shirt, to no avail.
"Thanks anyway." I replied, handing her the pack back.
She returned it to her purse. "Any time."
I flashed her a hesitant smile. "What's your name?"
She stretched her hand in my direction. "Harper."
Harper...
I shook her hand. "Elizabeth, but everyone calls me, Liz."
"Nice to meet you, Liz. Hopefully the rest of your day will go better for you." She said, returning my smile.
"Yeah... Hopefully..." I replied, awestruck.
Then, she gave me a little wave and walked off.
I watched her leave, watching her hips swaying slightly as she walked.
'Wow...' I thought.
Then, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I spun quickly, seeing Dallas standing behind me. "Good morning." She greeted.
"Morning, uh, how can I help you?"
She looked over my shirt. "The usual. What happened to your shirt?"
I looked down at my shirt, feeling slightly embarrassed. "Fucking teenagers... It's a long story."
She chuckled. "Well, hopefully your day will turn around."
I shrugged. "Hopefully."
I handed her a pack of cherry flavored vape juice and sent her on her way. Watching her leave with a sigh...
As day turned to night, I found myself walking out of the mall, making my way down the street back home.
I stopped at a crosswalk and looked both ways before crossing...
That's when I heard the sudden blaring of a horn, the bright shine of headlights blurring my vision.
I turned just as a speeding car barreled right into me.
The impact was sudden and painful. Everything turning to black quickly after...
My eyes slowly fluttered open, struggling to take in my bright white surroundings.
I pressed my hand to my forehead as I slowly got to my feet, looking in every direction. But, all I could see was white.
I took a few steps forward before calling out. "Hello? Is anyone there?"
Nothing.
Then, a woman appeared next to me.
I stumbled backwards, landing hard on the floor. "Who the hell are you?"
She gestured to the whiteness around us. "The owner of this fine establishment... The real question is, who're you?"
I propped myself up on my arms. "My names Elizabeth-"
"But, everyone calls you Liz. I know." She said, cutting me off.
I hesitantly got back to my feet. "Lucky guess."
She shrugged. "Something like that."
I rubbed my forehead. "You know my name, but I don't know yours..."
She looked at me thoughtfully before checking her watch. "You're here early."
I looked around. "Where's here?"
She stuck her finger up then. "First things first, my names Aileen."
I jumped back when she shot her hand in my direction.
I looked at it before nervously shaking it. "So... Aileen... Where are we?"
"Well, I believe you guys call it purgatory."
My eyes widened then. "You mean..?"
"Yep, you bought the farm, Kid. And, boy was it messy..."
