Harper and I sat down for breakfast. This is the farthest away from the mall I've made it since leaving that first night. Anything was possible now and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried. She looked at me from across the table. "So, why don't you tell me about yourself."
I looked down at the table, rubbing the back of my neck. "Well... My favorite color is purple, I love old movies... I read any chance I get. I have an older, half sister on a different continent and this is the longest Monday of my life."
Harper laughed. "It's only ten in the morning."
"I know... Isn't it great?" I replied.
"Well, I'd like to see where the day leads before I deem it 'great.'" She said, giving me a thoughtful look.
I returned her look. "You're one of those people that like to live in the moment, aren't you?"
She giggled. "Guilty as charged."
I folded my arms on the table. "What's that like? I've always lived my life on a tight schedule. I've never had time for... Well, myself."
She took my hand from across the table. "Maybe you should start... If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?"
I thought about her question for a long minute. I've never been out of the city, let alone the state. Just seeing what this country has to offer was more then enough for one lifetime.
"Anywhere... Everywhere... I've never been able to travel... Hell, I've never been outside the city..." I replied, lowering my head a little.
"Well, let's say you and me go to a little park I know out of town tomorrow?" She asked.
I looked back up at her, smiling a little. "That sounds great... If I make it to tomorrow, I'll definitely be there..."
"Sounds promising then." She replied. If only she knew...
Harper and I spent the rest of the day exploring little shops around the city. Places I've passed a million times, but never took the chance to go inside. It was... Enlightening...
Whatever it was that was happening to me blew, big time, but it made me realize just what I was missing in my life. And, I guess that was the point...
I stood outside my apartment building, Harpers hand in mine.
"I guess I should get going, huh?" Harper said.
I faced her, taking her other hand as well. "Harper... I've lived through this exact Monday more times then I care to count... and every time, I let you walk right past me... From this point forward, I refuse to let you out of my sight until I see Tuesday..."
Her cheeks turned pink, a slight giggle escaping her. "Ok... What'd you have in mind..?"
I looked into her eyes, my heartbeat was quick, the adrenaline flowing. 'If I'm gonna die again, I'd better make the best of the time I have.' I thought.
I leaned in then, pressing my lips to hers.
She was hesitant at first, before bringing her hands up to cup my cheeks. I rested my hands on her hips, pulling her body closer to mine.
When we finally pulled apart, I brushed a few stray hairs out of her face. "You're not going to slap me, are you?"
She chuckled, resting her forehead against mine. "That's not exactly what I had in mind..."
Before I could reply, I noticed Aileen standing behind Harper, a slight smirk on her lips.
I returned it, mouthing a quick "Thank you."
She gave me a little salute before snapping her fingers, disappearing right before my eyes.
"You still with me?" Harper asked.
I nodded. "Yeah... Would you like to join me upstairs..?"
Her face flushed. "I'd love to..."
I took her hand in mine, leading her up to my apartment...
The sound of the alarm pierced my ears. I shot up in bed, letting out a yell.
"Hey..? You ok?" I heard.
I turned, coming face to face with... "Harper..?"
She took my hand in hers. "I'm here, what's wrong..?"
I sucked in a tight breath, realization washing over me. "What day is it?"
She raised an eyebrow. "Tuesday... Why?"
I jumped out of bed then, letting out a happy squeal before collapsing to my knees.
Harper joined me on the floor. "Liz? What's going on?"
I took her face in my hands and placed a fierce kiss on her lips. "It's Tuesday! Yes!"
I got to my feet then and bolted into the kitchen. "Aileen! It's Tuesday!"
"Who's Aileen?" Harper asked, folding her arms over her chest.
"She's just a-" I noticed a folded letter on my kitchen table then, cutting me off.
I quickly picked it up and opened it, scanning over the delicate handwriting. 'Well, kid, you did it. You freed yourself. Don't take it for granted... It's been fun, but hopefully we'll never have to cross paths again. Enjoy yourself. Aileen.'
A couple tears welled in my eyes as I refolded the letter. "She was a good friend..."
"Liz... What the hell is going on?" Harper asked.
I took in a long breath, wiping at my eyes. "I was stuck in hellish cycle, reliving the same day over and over again and she helped me break free... You helped me break free... Thank you..."
She pulled me into a hug then. "You're welcome... I think."
I let out a chuckle as we pulled apart. "Trust me, I'm the happiest I've been in years. And it's all thanks to you."
She smiled, placing a quick kiss to my lips. "Then, good... Now, I believe you owe me a date in the park..."
I returned it. "I believe I do..."
I never saw Aileen again after that, but I owed her everything. She saved my life in more ways than one. Thanks to her, I found the love of my life in Harper. And, thanks to Harper, I found the adventure I was missing.
I spent so much time walking the same path, living the same day, wishing for something more. Now... Now I had everything I ever wanted...
And, I sure as hell wasn't going to give it up any time soon...
