Can't Be

A lot. That's what happened.

The first thing you could focus on was the voice. You had hoped you would never again hear his voice.

Touya.

"I bet you missed me." he said, his voice sending chills down your spine.

Not awaiting a response, he continues on casually, as if he wasn't recking your whole world. "It's alright, though. Won't be too much longer. Listen, you know we're still not happy about you leaving us for those so-called heros." His words flowed out loosely, his tone very conversational. "We'll catch up soon." he adds. "Doll, those three... the ones that stole you.. Their names escape my thought. Hm... Weren't they the ones spying on us right now?"

Your pupils shrunk and you tried to get words to form but they refused, instead tiny gasps of air squeaked out. He sighs. "Or maybe that's just another thing they didn't want you to know... Funny. Anyways, it's been too long. I'll have to see you soon, won't I?" The sinister laugh paired with the dropped call helped your brain catch up a bit and you gain the sense to call Aizawa as fast as humanly possible.

"Y/n? Hi, how's practice?" "Dabi." "What?" "The- The league. Are Mirio and- Is it true?" It was quiet. "Say something!" you pleaded. He sighs. "They're okay, Y/n. They know what they're—" "Do they? I- I just got a call from Dabi." "Dabi?! What?" "They kn-know they're there, Dad.. They know.."

Your shirt was clenched in your fist as you anxiously awaited direction or some sense of understanding, whichever came first.

"Listen, I know you're scared. But my number one thing is to protect you. And I will, Mic will, and so will the big three, you know that. We're gonna bring them home, trust me. And you will be okay at the end of it." "O-Okay, Dad." "Now you wrap things up with the class, cancel with Kaminari, and meet us at home." "Okay, bye, I love y-you." "I love you more."

A moment afterward, your body was taken by the distress of the situation.

Waking up the next day, Friday, with hardly any recollection of the previous, you were forced to go to school. You'd be safest there. The main topic in your head was how anything could go wrong and it'd be your fault. It weighed on you heavily. But no one had forgotten your reaction following Todoroki.

He approaches you. "Y/n, I-" You didn't have the mental capacity to deal with him, but tried anyway. "I'm still standing. Don't sweat it. I'm fine. Truly." You assumed it worked because he backed off right after.

However, Denki did not, coming twenty times harder. "Y/n? Hey, you okay?" You avoid eye contact. "Why wouldn't I be?" you say, continuing your path to your usual spot in the morning. He seemed puzzled. "Because of yesterday?" You shrug. "No clue what you're on about." He keeps following you. "Your reaction to Todoroki? The way you suddenly had to leave? Your legs gave out?" You don't respond and quicken your pace. He chases behind. "Are you just gonna pretend nothing happened?!" You give him only a glance. "That was the plan, if only you'd be so gracious." He intercepts your path and you stop with a groan. "Kaminari-" "Just tell me you're really okay. I'm just worried." His big eyes pleaded with your one revealed. You felt like you were at a disadvantage and avoid the question. "Why are you worried? It's not like we're friends." You go to walk around him but he blocks you again. "You might not be my friend, but I'm yours." You sigh, still looking away from him.

There's a silence, then he moves out of your way. Without a word you walk off. Something about the way he said it had you thinking about it for hours. Throughout the day you kept catching his eye. Every class, more than once, you would see someone staring in your peripheral vision, then you'd turn your head and see him looking at you. Studying you. He knew. You knew he knew. You weren't okay. He might not have known why, but he knew.
