As the human race evolved in the Universe, they rapidly spread along the Earth and adapted to its distinct conditions. As they organized into societies and began to form civilizations, a particular group differentiated radically from the rest. Not physically, but from an idealism. While some looked for happiness through the accumulation of material goods and others through the cultivation of virtues, these men and women thought that the only way to obtain true happiness was to make others happy as well. They took this idea to the point that they forgot completely to make themselves happy and dedicated their lives to the service of their fellow beings. All concerns for their own self faded away and truly desired to make others joyful and content, even at their own expense. They became the true lovers of humanity.

The other humans took advantage of this shift of perspective. They took care of them and loved them, procuring faithful subjects. But as they lost their intelligence and their rights were given away, the abuses began. They were taken as slaves, mistreated, and even murdered at their discretion. All sense of self-preservation had been long lost and they conceded to all their masters' whims.

The Universe appreciated the nobility of these people, whose will had already been reduced to those of the beasts that roamed the Earth. He aimed to rescue their souls as it thought that they had achieved their purpose on Earth. It was time to reinstate them to the Unity. However, after being proposed this privilege, they all desired to remain at the service of humans, as they had determined it as their sole purpose and unique source of joy. He decided to respect their wishes. Nevertheless, to protect them from the destructive nature of some humans whose souls were still far from being perfected, it was agreed that they would be reincarnated in different bodies.

It saw in wolves an outstanding capacity for teamwork, organization, and even self-consciousness. Besides, their quadrupedal anatomy and acute sense of smell and hearing would be useful for humans whose respective senses were not as developed. Their new bodies would not only provide useful tools for humans to benefit from but also aimed to protect them. Wolves had been one of humanity's most hostile foes back then, inspiring both fear and respect. Their new anatomy was meant to inspire these same feelings to all those who might want to cause them any harm. Since then the souls of these people began reincarnating in wolves' figures. We now know them as dogs.

The eyes are the windows to the soul, and it is still possible to see the human spirit that inhabits these creatures through theirs. Their love for humanity has only increased ever since and they have kept us company through our odyssey to find our purpose. They are worthy examples of fundamental virtues such as kindness, loyalty, justice, love, gratitude, and strength. And even if their present animal nature lacks temperance and their complete dedication to us constricts their own personal growth, they do inspire these values in all people who have the pleasure of counting on their support. They will not cease to exist until we have also perfected our souls. There is no greater love than laying down once on life for one's friend. They have eagerly done it throughout our history and continue to do so. They are genuinely humankind's best friends.
