"You're home," A voice spoke, scaring Driana as she entered the house.
"Mom," Driana said breathlessly. "So are you."
"I got off early," Ms. Berold told her, sitting in the kitchen. "What about you?"
"I decided to hang out with friends," Driana lied.
"Really?"
"Yes."
Ms. Berold stood up from her chair. "Okay, dear. I cooked steak for dinner, but I ate some already."
"Thanks, Mom."
As Ms. Berold left the kitchen, Driana sighed in relief. She hadn't told her mother about Jasper. Her plan to tell her mother last week had backfired when the conversation about Paul Lahote, her ex-boyfriend, surfaced randomly. The rumor of gang-related activity reached the diner where Ms. Berold worked. If only they knew they were a pack of shape-shifting wolves trying to protect their community.
Driana answered her phone. "Hey!"
"I have an idea," Alice sang on the other end.
Driana smiled. "I wonder what that could be."
"Why not celebrate Bella's birthday?"
"Alice," Driana politely warned. "Bella didn't want to celebrate her birthday or receive gifts, remember? As stubborn as she is, we'd need luck for her to cooperate."
"Edward will try." She could see Alice pouting.
"Not even Eddy boy can convince her."
"As I mentioned before, try."
Driana chuckled, knowing Alice needed a favor. "What would you like me to do?"
"Coax her into agreeing."
"Sounds like guilt-tripping," Driana said unsurely.
"She'll agree, anyway."
"Alice-"
"Excellent! I'll have Jasper bring you before seven o'clock sharp," The pixie-haired girl rushed out.
"Okay, but-"
"Sleep well, bye!"
Alice ended the phone call, her excitement blinding her from Driana's worries. Driana shook her head and ate dinner. She began thinking of ways for Bella to agree. The two girls only saw each other at the Cullen residence after Driana graduated with Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie. They would bond with Esme and Alice whenever Jasper and Edward had to hunt. Rosalie didn't mind Driana's presence, yet disliked Bella's visits.
"I thought you'd be asleep by now," Jasper's voice teased as he and Driana were on a call.
"I can't sleep when I'm worried."
"Want me to stop by? I bet I can help."
Driana felt herself smile. "Cheeseball."
"What worries you, Darling?"
"It's an awful feeling," Driana answered honestly.
"About what?"
"I'm not sure."
"How about I tell you the things from my human life?"
"Yes, please."
"They'd be boring enough to help you sleep."
"Are you joking? History isn't boring. Teach me stuff, Major Whitlock."
"Alright," Jasper chuckled.
Jasper started from the very first memory he could remember about his human life before becoming an officer. He explained the basic training that he had gone through, even laughing at his old self for stupidly being stubborn. The blond tried to recall the memories of his strategies and persuading higher-ranking officers. His voice turned dark when he mentioned what happened after becoming a vampire, aiding his creator, Maria, and her companions, Nettie and Lucy, in territory battles.
"Wow," Driana responded. "I'm proud of you."
"Why?"
"You've been through a lot. Here you are now."
"I would've been a savage," Jasper disagreed. "Some part of me still feels it. Everyone in the family lived better lives, in terms of being a newborn, better than I did."
"If you hadn't survived through that first year or met Alice, you wouldn't have seen the changed person you are."
"Thanks, cheeseball."
Jasper pulled the phone away, seeing the time displayed on the screen. He loved talking with her. It brought him joy in his never-ending life. However, his human needed to sleep. He placed the phone by his ear, speaking softly.
"My Darling, you need to rest."
"No," Driana sleepily replied.
"How about I keep talking? When you fall asleep, I'll end the call."
"Mkay," Driana spoke, muffled.
Before Jasper could begin, he heard her breathing pattern change. He quietly laughed, aware that Driana had fallen asleep. The blond stayed on the call for a few minutes, assuring himself she fell into a deep slumber with no disturbance. Feeling satisfied, he ended the call, sitting back in the chair.
"You're down bad, aren't you?" Emmett snickered, moving a chess piece.
"Oh, shut it." Jasper chucked a pillow at Emmett, who caught it with ease. "At least I'm not Edward, who watches from a corner."
"Hey, I heard that!" Edward complained, coming back from Bella's house.
