Chapter 5

A couple months passed, and Shikamaru could finally get the cast on his arm removed. He couldn't help a whole lot with Shikadai, which meant Naruto, Yoshino, and Shikaku had to do a lot of the work, but now that he was free of the cast, Yoshino didn't let him rest for a moment. She made him change and feed him, give him a bath, and take care of the boy when he woke up in the middle of the night.

Shikamaru yawned as he sat down on the couch next to Naruto, Shikadai in his arms, and a bottle in his hand. "Man, this is a drag."

Naruto chuckled as he leaned over and kissed the baby's head, then tilted his head up to kiss Shikamaru. "You're doing great, though."

"Yeah, I guess," the Nara said as he looked down at his son.

Naruto laid his head on Shikamaru's shoulder and watched the baby drink down his milk. "At least the elders don't have to worry about the heir situation now."

"Yeah," Shikamaru replied, a hint of sadness in his voice.

"What?"

Shikamaru looked up at him. "I feel bad. This is exactly what you were afraid of, right?"

Naruto sat up and shook his head. "No. I was afraid they were going to make me leave you so you could be with a woman." He looked down at Shikadai. "While I'm not happy with the way he's here, I am glad that the situation seemed to solve itself."

"Are you saying you're glad I was raped?"

Naruto looked up at him quickly and saw Shikamaru looking at him with an eyebrow raised. "No! Of course not!" he shouted, hands raised.

Shikadai jumped at the loud voice, but then settled again.

"Sorry," Naruto said as he rubbed the back of his neck, unsure if he was saying that to Shikadai or Shikamaru. "All I meant was that I'm glad something good came from a bad situation."

Shikamaru looked back down at Shikadai and smiled. "Me too."

"Do you know what they did with Temari?" he asked. Not long after they brought Shikadai home, they had found out the woman's name, and that they had started trying to get information from her, but he didn't know what happened after that.

"Thanks to Inoichi, they've gotten some information from her, but as far as I'm aware, she's just sitting in the Interrogation Core's holding room. Who knows when she'll be released or transferred to someplace else."

"Why would they release her?" Naruto asked, a bit aggravated at the thought.

"Dad mentioned something about a treaty. Lady Tsunade thinks they might be able to convince them to become allies with us in exchange for Temari."

"You think it will work?"

"Don't know. They've been discussing it for almost a month now," Shikamaru said as he took the bottle out of Shikadai's mouth, put a burp rag over his shoulder, and placed the baby there to burp him. "Hopefully something comes of it soon. I'd rather that woman wasn't in the same village as me."

Naruto reached up and ran his finger over the baby's cheek as Shikamaru patted the baby's back, and suddenly a loud burp came from the boy. "Geez, kid. You sound like Kiba."

Shikamaru laughed as he settled Shikadai back in his arm to finish feeding him. "I'm glad you're getting along with everyone better."

"All except Sakura. Even Ino's started to be nicer to me, but Sakura just won't let up."
