The little child stumbles through the heavy snow, clutching her thin jacket tightly in her cold hands. The dark pine trees cast long shadows in the light of the rising moon.
She is afraid of them.
It's so cold
Her older brother and she were playing hide and seek in the forest but that was hours ago and now she is lost.
The snow has long soaked into her boots and drenched the socks.
Stumbling through the dense foliage she unsuccessfully tries to find anything remotely familiar.
With an unfortunate step her trousers get caught in dead blackberry shrubs and tears a bit from the thorns.
It is so cold
At least it's not snowing yet. "Mama" she sobs afraid as she continues limping through the dark forest. The growl of her stomach interrupts her thoughts.
The last meal was before getting lost in the forest was a bowl of Rūgštynių, a chicken and vegetable soup, from grandma.
Hot tears run down her puffy cheeks at the thought.
She wants to go home.
The tears make it even harder to navigate through the unfamiliar terrain.
Taking another step the snow underneath her boot gives away to a slippery piece of wood, instantly making her loose her balance and falling on her butt.
That hurt.
It becomes even harder to keep away the tears as she sits in the unforgiving snow, shivering from the sheer cold.
One last time she finds the energy to stand up and continue aimlessly through the forest.
She is so tired.
The cold doesn't even feel so cold anymore.
In fact her feet barely feel anything anymore.
The snow is so heavy, wading through it feels impossible.
Riddled with exhaustion she leans against an old pine tree, her breath forming little clouds.
The area around the trunk is nearly free of snow as pine needles cover the ground.
Hugging herself more tightly she sags to the ground, leaning against the tree.
It's so cold
No animals can be heard.
It becomes harder to keep her eyes open. If she imagines hard enough she can nearly feel the heat of the oven in her grandmas house.
The rough bark could be the old chair she always sat in while grandma read her stories. The memory makes her happy as her eyes fall shut.
It's no longer cold. Tomorrow she will find home but right now she is too tired.
Curling up a bit tighter she falls asleep, oblivious to the sound of howling ringing through the forest.
Something warm and soft is blanketed on top of her as something vaguely damp nudges her cheek.
It's hard to open her eyes but when she does there is the outline of a wolve on top of her.
"Doggo" she slurs, trying to pet the animal but finds her arm trapped underneath the furry beast. The long and thick fur is nicely warm though so she doesn't really mind.
The wolf has been laying on her since he found the little girl in the forest. It kept her warm.
Had it found her about an hour later she probably wouldn't have survived. Now that she is conscious though the wolf stands up, nudging the girl to to the same.
She grabs onto the fur and slowly rises to her feet.
She is still not fully away from the danger of hyperthermia but it's good enough to get her out of the forest.
With a gentle nudge and lowering a bit the wolf guides the girl to climb on his back. With a bit of help she soon sits there, clawing into the silver fur with her stiff fingers.
Taking a few steps forward the wolf makes sure she is holding on tight before he starts quickly trot through the thick foliage, more graceful than any human ever could.
He will bring the little girl home.
"Thank you" she mumbles quietly into the soft fur but it's loud enough for his sensitive ears to pick up. A happy noise may or may not have left him at that.
About half an hour later they reach the edge of the forest and the lights of police cars reach their eyes.
"Mama is there" the girl cheers when she sees an adult talking with a police officer.
Lowering himself again the wolf makes it easier for the kid to get down. "Thank you" she says very grateful and hugs the much bigger wolf, giggling slightly when the wolf nuzzles her shoulder back.
With a gentle nudge the wolf says goodbye and urges her towards her family. "Goodbye" she says before running off.
The wolf watches from the forest how the mother sees the child, runs towards her and breaks down with a big hug.
With it's job done the wolf dissappears back into the thick foliage, hearing a distant "mama a wolf brought me back here" from the little girl.
The way home is way faster, now that there is nobody who can potentially fall off his back. The nightly forest has always been his home and he knows every stick and stone.
Soon a well known house comes into view and the wolve slips inside through a slightly open cellar window. As graceful as a cat the wolf jumps down several boxes and chairs until he reaches the bottom.
With a few quick steps the wolf quietly scurries up the nearby staircase to the ground floor of the building. Everything is as still and untouched from when he left earlier.
Soundlessly climbing another set of stairs leads to the first floor. A certain bedroom door is slightly ajar so the wolf carefully looks inside to the nation being dead asleep in her bed.
Lithuania has always been a heavy sleeper ever since she freed herself from Soviet. As if she is trying to catch up with those many years of terrible and anxious riddled sleep.
The wolf shakes his head and pulls the door closed again. Further down the hallway is a second bedroom which he fully enters.
There, in the bed, lies his body. He isn't actually a wolf. He is a wolf walker. Normal country at day and a wolf at night.
But who is he? He is Vilnius
A silver wolf with a magic older than his bond with Lithuania
Guardian of the forests
Protector of all living beings inside
He will come to the aid those in need and chase those out that bring nothing but destruction
And sometimes, sometimes he can save innocent lifes......
