The next morning, I picked y/n up to go to Quantico. She was waiting patiently outside of her building for me, headphones on, and bouncing on her toes slightly.

Before I got out of the car, alerting her to my presence, I allowed myself to take in the sight of the woman. She wore a long sleeved white button up shirt, her sleeves cuffed slightly as they were rolled up, with a dark red sweater vest over the top causing the unbuttoned collar of the shirt to jut out slightly. She had a pleated skirt reaching halfway down her thigh; her legs further accentuated by the platformed Mary Janes she paired it with.

I watched as she turned her head in my direction, and spotting my car, beamed and quickly walked over, placing the headphones around her neck as she got closer, and opened the door. 'Hey Em!' She sat herself down in the passenger seat shooting me a smile as she adjusted herself. I felt my eyes subconsciously flick down to her hands pulling her skirt towards her knees. My god....

I moved my eyes back to her eyeline, 'Would you like to keep listening to your music y/n/n?'

'Are you sure?'

'Yeah! Connect to the car.' I affirmed, pressing the button to allow her to connect her phone to the speakers.

She happily connected, and a Taylor Swift song started to play throughout the car. Truth be told, I hadn't given her a proper chance before, but whatever y/n liked to listen to I would give a chance and god was I right to.

'What songs this?' I briefly looked over to her as she sat contentedly watching out the window, lips pursed as she hummed softly to the song.

'State of grace.' She smiled softly at me.

'It's good, I like it.'

'You have good taste!' her smile grew at my comment, causing me to smile back at her.

'I do?'

'Yes! It's one of my favourites,' she quickly explained. The way her eyes lit up when she got excited about something was so magnetic, if I could make them shine like that forever, I would.

With that, I turned the music up, easing into a comfortable silence taking in the song; the slight humming of the younger woman along with the song made it all the more enjoyable to experience for the first time. I would never openly admit it, but every casual moment with y/n was making me become all the more smitten.

I am so fucked.

Traffic this morning wasn't too bad, so we ended up arriving earlier than usual. We made light conversation walking towards the building when I felt her eyes on me, causing me to look in her direction, meeting her eye.

'Em do you want a coffee or anything before we go in?'

'Yeah, that sounds good!' I agreed, smiling as I remembered the first time we got coffee together. The moment I met her I knew there was something about her and now, I don't even know how to acknowledge those feelings. She's now my subordinate and I won't be able to do anything about it.

We walked into the coffee shop, as I silently tried to push away my thoughts. This is really not the time. Approaching the counter, I went to speak but was immediately cut off by the woman next to me. 'Hi, could we please have an Apple and Rhubarb Refresher, and a coffee with Splenda. Thanks!'

She looked at me as she finished ordering, noticing my eyebrows furrowed slightly, a smile wearing on my face. 'What?'

'You remembered my order?'

She rolled her eyes slightly and laughed, 'Of course I remembered it Em, what was I gonna do? Forget the first thing you said to me?'

She looked away slightly at her last comment, finding distraction in paying for our drinks. It seemed as though every time she expressed any vulnerability, she'd counter it with a layer of coldness or deflection and a hope that it'd go unnoticed; suffice to say, it definitely didn't.

'Uh so what's the plan today?' deflection. We picked up our drinks and started to make our way to the lift.

'So, I'll go through your new start paperwork with you, Tara has already signed off on passing you for her class, and you'll be issued your new permanent gun and badge. Then I've asked if JJ will go over how to fill out case reports with you, so you can write up yours for the case a couple of days ago.'

She gave me a tight-lipped smile and nodded looking to me, meeting my eye. 'Are you alright y/n?' I couldn't not say anything could I?

'Yeah,' she covered up, 'Just first day jitters I guess!'

Before I could reply the lift made an abrupt beeping sound signifying, we were at the end of the ride, y/n's eyes moving back to the doors. She stepped off, immediately noticing the sound of stilettos clacking down the hall. 'Good morning my perfect pumpkin pie, and my dazzling unit chief all at the same time? This is the best surprise!'

'Hey Pen!' y/n and I responded at the same time.

'We've got to start on this paperwork Pen, but I'll send y/n down for the rest of the admin stuff later?'

'Oh yes! Of course, it'd be my pleasure!' The blonde beamed at us both, eyes flicking back and forth slightly before she turned on the balls of her feet back to her 'lair'.

I looked back to the younger woman and nodded my head towards my office, allowing us to both walk through the bullpen, and up the steps to the room, both setting our bags down and settling at opposite sides of the desk.

Rummaging slightly, I pulled out some forms I had printed and handed them over to her, taking my own copy to read through as she did, ready to explain anything if needed.

We went through the documents, as I explained briefly the terms under each clause, until we reached the end, watching her sign the forms.

'Do you have any questions?' I finally asked before concluding this part of my morning.

I looked at the woman sat in front of me as she toyed with the pendant around her neck, 'Yeah, I do actually...' she trailed off, a pit forming in my stomach. 'What does this mean for whatever is going on between us, Emily?' shit.

I fumbled with my response slightly. I had half expected not to talk about it, and I know how that sounds, but I knew if we acknowledged it, we'd have to stop whatever we were doing and I didn't want that to happen.

The fact was she was now my subordinate, and we wouldn't be able to act on any possible feelings. This is going to suck.

'I'm your boss now y/n, I just, I don't see how we can keep going on the way we are...' I don't want this.

'I get it, completely. I don't want to jeopardise my career; you don't want to jeopardise yours, it's completely understandable.' I watched as she agreed with me, but I couldn't help but search for any sadness or disappointment written on her face. 'So what? We just keep our distance from now on?'

'Yeah, I guess so. Y/n/n I'm-' She cut me off before I could apologise.

'What did I need to do next? Get my badge and gun?' She had fully gathered herself, if I could find any disappointment in her disposition before, I wouldn't now; it was as if I were completely iced out.

'Yes, JJ will walk you down.' I allowed my demeanor to cool to her level. I don't want you to block me out.

'Thanks Chief.' She nodded giving me a tight-lipped smile, walking out with her bag, the door shutting behind her. Dammit
