Dark circles under my eyes greet
your five o clock shadow
and they mingle like kindred spirits
of cold coffee and unread texts. We need for sleep to find us
for just a little while
and yet we can't stop staring
at those ten tiny toes.I find myself crying at all hours
of the night and day
for no particular reason
besides the turmoil of hormones
slowly destroying my entire personality. You let our baby boy sleep
on your chest and I couldn't
imagine a more beautiful moment
to witness in our life.We hold hands as we stare
At the tiny monitor screen
Knowing he's sleeping and safe
In his warm cozy bedBut wanting to see his perfect
button nose just one more time
Before begging sleep to find us
for just two hours before it's timefor my sad, bleeding nipples
to go back to work
and I'll stare at your sleeping face
silently cursing you and your
worthless nips.I fall asleep in the rocking chair
milk soaked shirt clinging to me,
sleeping baby on my chest.
You tell me it's the most
beautiful picture of our life.
