Before Her

Blue eyes smile that same smile
he's always had,
laughing at the same friends

he's joked with since they were kids.
Things were fine.
Life was good, you could say.

A nagging feeling settled in,
made itself at home
in the pit if his stomach.

He knew there was more to life
than drinking games,
high school jokes.

Searching for something new
to fill the void in his life
breathe love into him

He wandered aimlessly
studying each moment
in hopes he'd fine the one

person who would change
everything, brighten his dim
world. He was looking for

sunshine. That old football
tee suddenly felt dull, worn out.
He was drowning by himself.

Darkness in the distance
settling in over head
Smothering him in night.

A string of bad dates,
worse drinks on hopeful lips,
ending another night alone.

When he felt hopeless,
ready to stop looking, there she was.
He found the sun.
