When I arrived at the party, Audrey and Camila led me through the building. The boat club was huge, modern, and three stories tall, with a massive pool. The building was crowded, and people were surrounding the pool.

Audrey took my arm and dragged me off to a large group of people. "Hi, everyone. This is Jude, me and Camila's new roommate," said Audrey. "And someone please hand us both a drink."

"No thanks. I don't drink," I said while declining a cup of who-knows-what. "Plus, it's a school night."

"Oh, come on. Tomorrow is the first day of school, so we probably won't do that much," said the tall, blonde boy who looks about my age. "And I'm Alex, by the way." "I'm Jude," I say while declining the cup again.

"Alex takes most of the same classes as us, and he plays field hockey for the boy's team," explained Audrey as I nodded my head in understanding.

"Where's Camila?" I asked.

"Probably out looking for James. They've been arguing about something he said to her," answered Audrey while looking around the room and pointing her finger at Camila and a tall brunette boy.

"Who's James?" I asked over the loud music, barely getting Audrey to hear my question. "He's a senior and Alex's brother," she answered.

"Yeah, but I'm warning you to stay away from him. He's only trouble," interrupted Alex after clearly overhearing our conversation. "He's right," agreed Audrey.

After a while of hanging out with Audrey and some of her friends, Camila approached us in tears. "Guys, I'm going back to the hostel. Just letting you know."

"What happened? Are you okay?" asked Audrey.

"I'm alright. I just need to get out of here as soon as possible," answered Camila, clearly still crying.

"I'll go with you," I said. "Parties aren't really my thing anyway."

"Are you sure? You don't have to," reassured Camila.

"Yeah, plus it's unsafe for you to walk back alone." I confirmed.

As me and Camila were walking out of the building, a brunette girl stopped us. Camila clearly didn't want to talk to her and tried to walk around her, but the girl stepped in front of us and stopped us from leaving.

"What do you want, Mia?" asked Camila, irritated.

"I just wanted to catch up with an old friend. Is there something wrong with that?" Mia said, in a sarcastic tone.

"Yeah, there is something wrong with that, since we're not friends and you're just looking for trouble," snapped Camila.

"Oh, come on. Don't be such a b*tch. I was just trying to be nice," snapped Mia back. "And who is your little friend?"

"I'm Jude," I answered, not really trying to start a conversation since I saw how Mia was purposely trying to get to Camila.

"You're the new girl. Let me teach you how it works around here. First of all, stay away from Alex. I saw how flirty you were with him. And second, don't come in my way. Whether it's academic, at hockey, or anywhere else. Got it?"

Before I could say anything back, Camila grabbed my arm and dragged me away from Mia. "If we don't leave now, I might break her face," said Camila, frustrated.

"What's her problem?" I was a little confused by what just happened. "And I wasn't even flirting with Alex."

"That's just the way Mia is. She thinks everything belongs to her. She and Alex have been dating on and off for about a year." Camila looked away from me, trying to hide her tears.

"I know it's none of my business, but what happened in there? Did James hurt you?" I asked. I'm not sure why I asked, but it just slipped out. It doesn't concern me, and I should just stay out of it.

"No, he just said something that upset me. We used to be friends, you know. But after last year, he just, well, I don't know, he's just different. I don't even recognise him anymore. It's like I'm talking to a stranger." she answered. I'm surprised that she trusts me with that. We know so little about each other, and yet she talks to me like I'm a friend she's known for years.

When we reached the hostel, we got ready for bed and sat on my bed talking about school and getting to know each other better.
