My first day of school was hectic. Classes were way harder than at my old school, and I could barely keep up.

We have eight periods a day, with a long lunch break after the first three periods and a smaller break after the sixth period. After school, it's mandatory for students to participate in at least one sport.

Me, Audrey, and Camilla had physics in the third period, and they asked me to sit next to them on one of the large tables.

As I was paying attention in class, Audrey tapped my shoulder and slipped me a note. "It's from Alex," she whispered while pointing me in his direction. He was looking at me with a wide smile on his face.

I opened the note and it said "I couldn't stop thinking about you since last night. Can I have your number?-Alex"

I wrote down my number and passed the note back. As I turned back to look at Alex I saw Mia giving me dirty look and angrily wiping her head to look away from me.

Audrey and Camila led me to the cafeteria and outside towards the tables after we received our food. They started eating and waited for me to start eating too. Eat, they're waiting for you to eat. Just do it now; you can work it off later. I took a bite of my food, and they continued eating.

"So, what did Alex's note say?" asked Audrey in a teasing tone. "He asked for my number," I answered.

"Is that it? He couldn't stop talking about how beautiful you are," admitted Audrey. "He said he couldn't get me out of his mind since last night." I answered shyly. "

" I knew it," said Camila.

"Wait, you pulled Alex, as in Alex Carmen. The boy's hockey team captain. That's a new one," said Camila.

"No, I didn't pull anyone . He just asked for my number. And why is that such a big deal?" I was a little confused.

"Girl, you already have the most popular guy in school falling for you, and the last time he had a girlfriend was before Mia liked him." answered Camila, "She usually tries to scare off the girls Alex likes."

I look at both of them and say, "She definitely tried to skate me off last night. But why's she doing that?"

"She just can't handle someone beating her at anything. She usually gets what she wants. And I saw the way she looked at you after the note thing. Girl, I would watch my back and sleep with one eye open if I were you," said Audrey, laughing.

As I stood up to throw away a piece of paper from my lunch box, I saw James looking directly at me from the other side of the courtyard. He looks at me with a pure hatred I've never seen before. He has his arm around Mia's shoulder as she's talking to another girl. He sees me looking at him but he doesn't look away. He keeps staring.

After school finished,I walked back to the hostel to change and get my hockey gear. When I arrived at the astro field, I started stretching next to some of the other girls getting ready for tryouts.

As I was busy, Mia walked towards me and started stretching next to me. "I'm not trying to crush your dreams or anything, but tryouts are usually for people who can play real hockey. Not for people that grew up playing on a worn grass field of a public school."

"Mia, I don't know what your problem is with me, but I've never done anything to you. For the record I'm just as capable as you to be here and play hockey. And watch out, the public schooled hockey player might teach you a thing or two on the astro field." Wait, wtf did I just say. It all just came out without thinking.

One of the coaches blew a whistle and told us to gather around before Mia had a chance to say something back. She walked away furious.

"Hi girls, I'm coach Megan and I'll be coaching the girls first hockey team. Today me and several other coaches and professionals will be choosing this year's team. We'll randomly assign each of you in teams and you'll be playing matches against each other."

-

I can do this. I was assigned as a midfielder. It's the position I'm most comfortable with and I've been playing it all my life.

One of the other team's players had the ball and passed it to Mia, thats a few meters in front of me. I ran to stop the ball before it reached her but she tripped me with her stick and I just missed it. I got up, turned around and jabbed the ball off her stick and the ball bounced behind her. I took the ball and started to dribble it. I dribbled it passed two players and shot it into the goal.

Every one on my team was cheering and ran to give me a group hug. Mia threw her hockey stick to the ground and stormed off the field.

When I looked at the side of the field, I saw Alex cheering me on with a wide smile on his face. I smiled back at him.

The next day at school the tryouts results was on the notice board. I anxiously looked for my name and there it was. I made the team. A wave of relief washed over me as I released the breath i didn't even know I was holding.

When I looked under my name I saw Mia's.
