Chapter 46
"So. How did you meet Lisa?"
"Well. We met in a party seven months ago. Four months later she went to work in my company..."
"Lisa said you gave her a hard time."
"Well. I... I had... well, bad things happened to me before and I was not the bigger believer in love. It was not like I was being difficult or anything I just didn't want her..."
All women looked at her as if she was from the moon.
"... at that moment, but she was insistent."
"And you gave in."
"Had to. Your daughter can be very hardheaded sometimes."
"Yeah, I know. You are the first girlfriend she brings home."
"You are kidding!"
"No. We only knew she had a girlfriend after she became famous because we saw it in magazine covers. When we asked when we would meet the girl she would say soon, but she never brought anyone. She always broke up with them before she decided to do it. So I think she was only waiting for the right girl to bring home. She loved photography and studied most of the time. I'm not saying she didn't date before the fame. She was a magnet for girls."
"I can understand."
"Yes. But nothing serious enough. I hope you know she is a wonderful person."
"I know. How... how was she when she was a child?"
That was enough for Joyce to go around talking about her sons and daughters' childhood. How Lisa at age of six after a class about plants and seeds decided to eat orange seeds, drink enough water and stay in the sun to see if a plant would grow in her belly. She told her a history of William, who since a kid loved motorbikes, and decided to run around the house doing motorbike noises with his mouth, and how he would threaten everyone that made fun of him. Dru used to call every woman mommy because she never looked up. William and Lisa beating up the crap out of a guy who dated Dru and was mean to her. It was easy to say the kids had a happy childhood. She told Jennie about the day Lisa broke her arm while trying to be an acrobat. Joyce was right, Jennie really felt at home.
After a while, Lisa missed Jennie and went to the Garden followed by the other men in the house. He stood up in the door just to see how things were going and saw her happily talking with her mother and Jenna, while holding one of the twin in her arms.
She left her observatory position and went to her. Lisa leaned over and kissed Jennie lips softly.
"Hey, Aunt Lisa. There are at least three kids around."
"Dawn, you are fifteen. Are you trying to tell you didn't kiss any boy? What about..."
"Aunt Lisa!"
Lisa gave her nephew a loop sided smile and turned to Jennie.
"How are things? What were you talking about?"
"You mother was telling me about the day you decided to grow a plant in your belly, ah... and when you decided that you had to paint your head just like William and had to go to the hospital because of an allergy. She said you were not a good acrobat."
"Mom, please! Don't tell anymore stories about me to Jennie. You are giving her reasons never to marry me."
"So, Joyce. Do you have anything more to tell me about Lisa."
"Yes. Oh, I remember one of her birthday parties."
"No. Mom!"
"What? Now I want to know."
"Well. We made her believe that we would not be at home at night, while we prepared her birthday party to be a surprise. She came back from her basketball game and we heard her voice in the hall mumbling about parents and birthday. The house was dark. She took her clothes off there... I mean she took all of her clothes off. I didn't know who was more surprised when we screamed 'surprise'. She was the family joke, our punch bag for... I don't know... a month at least. Not necessary to say that after seeing her... uh... predicaments many girls came around."
Jennie was laughing so much she almost spilled beer in Lisa's chest. Joyce called the boys to do the hard work of carrying the food to the table outside. In the kitchen, Joyce held Lisa's arms and kissed her forehead.
"I like her. If I were you, I'd secure her just in case. I think a Claddagh ring is in order there."
