Song for the chapter: Bad Liar ~
By: Imagine Dragons

So look me in the eyes,
Tell me what you see,
Perfect paradise,
Tearing at the seams.
I wish I could escape,
I don't wanna fake it,
Wish I could erase it,
Make your heart believe,
But I'm a bad liar, bad liar.

Every family has secrets.

So did Raven's.

Filthy ones at that.

The Aubert Family was rather poor. The working man in it not earning enough to now support a family of four - The mother, daughter and newborn.

Catherine, she was named, by Raven's mother Amelia. The youngest member's name meant purity. Even though, after the the birth of Catherine nothing was pure or family-like in the Aubert Residence.

Mr. Aubert; Anton, was rather edgy and always stressed over the income of the family. Mother had to start working pretty much as soon as Catherine learned to walk and talk.

Raven was eight. Catherine just two.

And despite the fact both of them were young, they learned to look over each other quite quickly. Raven used to prepare porridge for Catherine in the morning, then dropped the toddler off at the good neighbour's house. And went off to school by a bicycle, knowing well enough her parents couldn't afford her transport.

It was routine for them.

But one certain Thursday, the routine didn't go as planned.

Raven still remembers that day...

Raven was eleven. Catherine just five.

The alarm clock rang at the set time, loud and sharp in the still house. The sound cut through the air like knife to butter. But Raven, mere primary school goer, was already awake. Wide eyed staring at the ceiling, contemplating till now, motivating herself out of the bed and readying herself for life.

How hard can it be? More like, how hard should it be? To face the world head-on. Like the youth around her.

But she couldn't. That day, definitely not.

It was that rotting feeling in her stomach, that stench you get when you come in the radius of danger. When something unexpected was to be thrown at you and you were expected to handle it skillfully.

How can she even understand these things at such a young age? The young girl thought.

And just as the siren went ringing beside her bed that had become too small to fit her growing body in, a wailing erupted on the other side of the door.
