Maya made sure to put on her high heels with her outfit. Surely Lucas would be impressed then, right?
She had repeatedly tried to impress him. It started the day they met.
She wanted to impress him by being bold, so being his first girlfriend and ex-girlfriend in a matter of seconds was her choice.
Then the homework rebellion.
It was to impress him to seem like she would fight for what she wanted.
Yet, she wouldn't dream of fighting Riley for him.
Then came makeup.
Gradually, she wore more and more to make her seem beautiful.
It started with a little bit of clear lipgloss and concealer (for pimples).
Then, colored lipgloss and brow pencil.
Then, lipstick and blush.
Then, eyeliner and mascara.
Sooner or later, she wore a full face of it.
Next was teeth.
She realized her teeth were an unhealthy whitish-yellow color.
She saved up her money and bought a tube of 'Crest 3D Whitening Toothpaste' so her teeth could look just like Riley's.
Next came her style.
She figured it was time for a change.
She spent hours searching for inspiration on Tumblr each night.
She would go down to demolition to see what she could find.
Then, she'd go grab something from Riley's closet.
Lastly, she would tie it in with some nail polish, perfume, and jewelry of hers.
Now it was stilettos.
She had bought the highest pair in all of New York on sale at Demolition for $14.99. $14.99! That's a steal.
She practiced walking in them for two hours straight the night before, yet she made the same mistake she had made the first time she tried them on.
She fell.
And he wasn't there to catch her.
She finished up in the lunch line, balancing her knockoff designer purse and her tray in her arms. Suddenly, someone threw a milk carton (aiming for the trash can) on the floor. She unknowingly stepped on it, slipping across the cafeteria floor in front of every student in the room. She tried grabbing onto the counter with her manicured hand, but it slipped. She was humiliated. She thought Riley was the super-klutz.
Her clothes were covered in meatloaf, green beans, and orange jello. The curls that took her two and a half hours to do this morning were filled with sticky bits of fruit salad. Her nails were chipped and coated in ketchup. Her face was splattered with apple juice and hot tears. Her head pounded in pain and her chest palpitated while sobbing. She closed her eyes. Her ears filled with sounds of gasps, snickers, and lots of laughter. Normally, she'd be laughing too, but it's not so funny when it's happening to you. Her friends crowded around her.
"Maya, are you alright?" Riley asked.
"Do you think she died?" Farkle questioned.
"She probably just fainted." Lucas stated.
"Just fainted? You act like this happens every day!" Riley exclaimed.
"Actually" Lucas started "back in Texas,"
"Would ya quit it with the cowboy crap, Mr. Howdy?" Maya asked, rhetorically.
"So what I'm hearing is, she's not dead?" Farkle asked.
"Of course I'm not dead, Dr. Turtleneck." Maya shot back. Lucas pulled her to her feet. "Although, I may have a mild concussion. Nothing hospital-worthy though."
"Let's get you cleaned up." Riley said, rushing her to the bathroom.

"What happened back there?" Riley asked, concerned.
"I slipped on someone's stupid milk carton." Maya replied.
"In those shoes? You need to explain the pain." Riley said.
"I was trying to get a boy to notice me." Maya replied.
"Well, it worked. The whole school noticed you!". Riley exclaimed, wiping the food off of Maya's outfit.
"Tell me about it." Maya said, picking the fruit out of her hair.
"Luckily, I have a bag of your extra clothes." Riley replied, pulling out a bag. "And you are not wearing those shoes." Maya snatched the bag to have a closer look. It contained a 'The Hunger Games' tee shirt, hot pink leather jacket, a dark blue plaid skirt, red leggings, and a pair of zebra-striped ankle booties with three-inch heels.
"I can't wear this in front of Lucas!" Maya exclaimed.
"You were trying to impress LUCAS?!? Riley shouted.
"Surprise." Maya replied awkwardly.
"Eh, it's fine. I've started to like Farkle a bit, so I really don't care." Riley said. "I also brought a just-in-case curling iron and a little makeup." Maya rummaged through the bag to find a curling iron, neutral eyeshadow, brow pencil, brown mascara, nude lipstick, and concealer. Maya changed into the outfit.
She looked like herself again.
Riley quickly did the loose curls she used to wear and applied natural makeup, using the concealer on her eyes which were still red.
"Wow, Maya. You look like you." Riley said, cheerfully.
"Thanks." Maya replied, smiling.
"Oh, one more thing." Riley said, handing her a packet of nail polish remover wipes and black nail polish. Maya removed the teal color from her fingernails and applied the black color to her nails.
"I've got a plate of mac n' cheese, a bowl of salad, and a chocolate pudding cup. You have five minutes to eat." Riley said, handing Maya a tray. She ate as fast as she could, running to history class.

"You okay?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"I'm good, Mr. Matthews." Maya replied.
"One question" Mr. Matthews started. "why do you look like you again?"
"I decided that I wouldn't try so hard to impress people." Maya said. "If they don't like me for me, then that's their problem."
"Wow, Maya." Lucas replied.
"What, you liked the old me better?" Maya asked. "Well too bad 'cause-"
"You look a lot better than you did." Lucas said.
"Thanks." She replied blushing.
"I mean" Lucas started. "you looked totally awkwa-"
"I said thanks, do not push it." Maya replied.
But push it he did.
