Chapter 1- Reconnecting

May 27th

Every year on my dads birthday we come back to the hospital to honor his life. We always bring gifts for the nurse and of course gifts for the patients going through treatment. This year makes 5 years of us doing it. I still hope that when we walk through theses doors that he will be sitting in there getting his treatment, waiting for us to join him... but then the pain hits when we walk in and the nurses smile at us knowing what day it is.
After passing out all the gifts to everyone, we start talking to all the nurses. Of course my mom had to bring up that I start college in the fall and I am going to be studying nursing. Of course the staff here is what made me want to be come an oncology nurse. Of course they were all so excited and told me if I need anything, they are there to help. Theses people have seen me grow up, the first time I walked through those doors I was ten and now I am eighteen.
As we are walking out of the hospital, we stop in our tracks right by the Boston Hospital Oncology sign. Someone yelled, "Stacy?" My mom turned around, not knowing who to expect. When she turned around, she said "oh my gosh, Beck... Laurel?" They both started to hug my mother. I stood there awkwardly, as they all started to chat. The one who I assume to be beck, ask "what are you doing here? And is this beautiful girl, your daughter?"
That was the first time one of my moms friends had called me beautiful. I normally just get called pretty out if pity. I wouldn't call my self beautiful. I am definitely not the main character, I am more of the main characters best friend. And not the hot best friend, the kind of best friend you have had since you were in diapers so you can't really ditch them.
I snap out of my thoughts and here my mom say "it's my husbands birthday. Every year we bring gifts to the nurse and patients, in his memory." Laurel grabs my moms hand and gives here an I'm sorry look. "That is so sweet of the both of you." My mom looks back at beck, "Susannah, are you here for your treatment?"
Wait I thought her name was beck.... and wait she has cancer?
She looks at laurel and back at my mom. " I am and hopefully this is my last one!" My mom gives her a big smile. "That is amazing, I am so happy for you!" Laurel cuts in " I don't want to be the buss kill here, but beck we need to get inside before we are late." My mom looks at both of them, "of course, get in there and get it done!" The both smile at her. "Good luck, I will be thinking of you!" My mom says to them as the turn to walk in the door.
My mom and I move to start to head to the car, when I hear beck's voice again, "Stacy! We should grab lunch tomorrow!" My mom smiles and replies " sounds good!" We then are on our way.
On the way back home my mom fills me in. Her, Susannah and Laurel, were all friends in college. But after they all had kids, my mom slipped away. She said that Susannah and Laurel had always been the duo and she was the third wheel but she has always missed there friendship
