August 15, 2017

Cassiopeia Bellatrix Black had been up early every day since the first of August. It had finally been the year she had been waiting 11 long years for. This was finally the year she got to go pick out her wand. Of course she got to go to Hogwarts but that was not her main priority. She wanted her wand so she could cast spells without having to sneak her mummy's wand behind her back. She was also excited to get to Hogwarts though the Headmistress already told Bella that there would be no exceptions to the Quidditch team rules this year. Cass would not be permitted to play no matter how efficient she was at flying. She was more than a little disappointed when her mum came back with the news. She was also beyond excited that her cousin Teddy was going to be a 7th year student so she had hopes that as Head Boy, he would be able to bend the rules for her and James on occasion.  "Is it here yet?!" She asked running down to breakfast, looking for their owl.

"I'm afraid not, darling. The owl hasn't come yet."

Cass crossed her arms and flipped into her chair, "it's not fair. We have the slowest owl on the planet. She must have gotten lost."

"Your Uncle Harry said James hasn't received his letter yet."

"Nor has Lyra," Bella came into the room joining the conversation. "It's only 15 days until you leave. Rue letter has to come today. McGonagall can't expect us to run to Diagon with all of the commoners when they receive their letters. It'll be crowded and far too people-y for the Blacks."

"Bella," Hermione's tone had a sense of warning. "I have it on good authority that the letters are coming today."

"I want to get a letter," Minnie was last to come down for breakfast. "It's not fair."

"Aww bean," Bella tried to hide her smirk, "you'll get to go next year. You've only just turned ten. Cass has been 11 for almost a year now."

"Yeah, I should be the one complaining that I was born in December."

"Trust me," Bella recalled the events of her birth, "that was not the plan."

"You'll be queen of the primary school this year," Cass tried to make her sister feel better. "It'll be so cool for you."

"But you get to go to Hogwarts," Minnie wasn't falling for the bullshit. "It's not nearly as exciting."

"One more year, sweet girl." Hermione finally took a seat, helping herself to some of the regular breakfast fare that had already been sitting on the table waiting for everyone. Minnie had been trying to convince them all summer that when Cass went to pick out her wand that she should be able to get one too. The answer was always, "you'll have to wait until you are 11 like your sister did." She was never thrilled with that answer but like the Quidditch rules, some rules are in place for a reason.

Breakfast was mostly over when there was a small knock on the window, "the owl! It's here!" Cass was shouting, running over to open the window.

"Is that the owl I heard?" Teddy had made his way in for breakfast, late as usual. It was customary for teenagers to sleep the day away. At least that's what Bella surmised. "Mmm breakfast," he sat down and made himself a big plate. Granny is working today. If the letters come, can I go with you guys to Diagon? She left me shopping money."

"You are always welcome to come with us," Hermione patted his hand. "And you know what your Auntie Bella is getting ready to say."

Bella and Teddy responded at the same time, "your money's no good here."

The owl flew over and dropped the mail in front of Bella. The dark witch slowly sorted the mail knowing her daughter was suffering from the wait. "Hmm," she shuffled the letters around more.
