Seeing the base after your most recent mission felt like seeing an oasis in the desert. You plopped down on the floor next to the sofa without a second thought, taking a deep breath of air into your lungs. It was a relief to finally be home.
König and Ghost sat on the small sofa behind you. You tended to forget how big the men were until you were directly next to them. You seemed even smaller now, sitting beneath them.
Their chattering behind you seemed to fade in and out as your leaned your head back, not realizing it was on König's leg. Your eyelids felt heavy. You fought sleep, not wanting the guys to make fun of you for it. The mission shouldn't have been that taxing on you.
Ghost was talking slightly louder than König. Something about you. "I didn't think y/n would handle this type of mission well." You couldn't tell if it was supposed to be an insult or a compliment.
"Respectfully, Lt. Fuck off." You mumbled. König laughed lightly, making sure to not move his leg. "I can handle myself on missions, I'm not a little kid." Your words came out in a harsh tone.
Ghost grumbled something under his breath about going for a smoke. The sofa shifted, making you lift your head quickly. It startled you. As you watched Ghost leave, you heard him muttering to himself.
"You are welcome to come sit with me up here, y/n." König spoke softly. His Austrian accent was always calming to you for some reason.
You lifted yourself off of the ground and onto the sofa next to König. The absolute giant of a man took up a majority of the space, but that was fine with you.
You put your legs over his, crossing your ankles and leaning back. "So what's up, König?" You asked, yawning.
He took a moment to think, "I am very glad to be home. That mission was tiring to me." His tone had shifted slightly as he put his hand on his knee over your leg. "Are you doing well, y/n?" He sounded very sincere in his question.
You yawned again. You felt very comfortable with him, you were fighting the urge to sleep a bit less. "Ghost wasn't entirely wrong about me not handling the mission well." You spoke slowly. "I've never been more tired in my life."
König smiled under his mask. "I understand," he spoke, "during my first year here I was not ready for these longer missions." He moved his arms to be crossed over his chest. Even without all of his gear on he was massive. "I think you did very well, all things considering."
You grinned. "Considering what, König?" You laughed lightly, nuzzling yourself further into the plush sofa.
"Well, this is one of your first longer missions, ja?" It was a rhetorical question. "I wouldn't expect you to be as well off as you are. You are doing very well." You could hear his smile. He was trying to make you feel better. "I knew you would be able to handle it. You are strong."
You blushed lightly, the compliment hitting you hard. "Danke." You spoke. You learned a small bit of German by being around König turning your training. You also grew closer to him in that time. He was the first of the team to welcome you. "How was the mission for you, big guy?" You asked, just wanting to keep him talking.
As he spoke his words faded in and out, just as you did. Every now and again he would say your name, making you perk up. After which you would lay your head back down.
He knew that you were falling asleep, he didn't mind. König kept talking, letting you rest. He wouldn't tell you, but he was worried about your well-being after the intense mission. Even for him, an experienced solider, it was mentally taxing. You weren't exactly known for being the happiest member either, missions often took a toll on you. He hadn't lied, König did think you were strong, he knew you were. You had handled the outing better than he expected you would.
