▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇Toby McAllister had always felt like she was drowning.
It never mattered how hard she fought, there was always something else just beyond the horizon, waiting for her to catch her breath before it came and pulled her under deeper than before. Each time she was forced to fight harder to reach the surface, and each time the endless expanse of deep blue seemed just that bit more inviting.
It all started, she thinks, when she saw her mother drown.
Blue lips from a lack of oxygen. Diluted irises fixed and unseeing. A strange white foam coating her nose and mouth. Paramedics had said Maya McAllister was dead long before Toby had found her. The relentless pounding the ten year old girl had done on her mother's chest was a pointless exercise that did nothing but fuel the waves she would soon have to face. It was no surprise, they had said, with the amount of drugs in Maya's blood it was a miracle she lasted as long as she did before she drowned in her own vomit, too high to roll herself to the side.
It had taken Toby weeks to surface after that first wave. Panting and exhausted and ready to swim ashore, yet it seemed life had different plans.
