After the chaos at the scrap yard, Toby had deemed herself done with treasure hunting for the day. While the group celebrated retrieving the drone, she made a quick exit, leaving them to plan their next move without her.
JJ, predictably, had tried to convince her to stay, but one glance at the exhaustion settling in her eyes told him there was no point. She had socialised enough for the day.
She came home to an empty house, the lack of smoke in the air telling her that her dad was long gone, and would most likely stay that way until the early hours of the next morning. Toby preferred it that way though. It meant she didn't have to tip toe around her own house, constantly on edge, scared to say or do the wrong thing and invoke Fred's harsh drunken words.
So she went through her usual routine — cleaning the house, sighing at the near-empty fridge and mentally adding shoplifting to her ever growing to-do list — before collapsing into bed for a well deserved nap.
When she woke up, the sun was already peaking into the horizon, casting a soft orange glow through the newspaper she had taped over where her window used to be. Toby groaned and rolled over, her head thumping back onto the pillow. In her half-awake state, she slapped her hand over the nightstand, blindly searching for the little box that housed her weed. Coming up empty, she groaned again, louder this time, frustration bubbling up inside her.
Sitting up, she ran her hands down her face, tangling her fingers in her hair. Not only was she out of weed, but she couldn't go out and get more. She owed Barry money she didn't have, for weed she was meant to sell (and then lost), as well as a bag of expensive drugs Fred was going through quicker than she could replace.
Even though they found the drone that morning, their plan getting back on track, and even if they found the shipwreck in the coming days. It would take weeks before they could turn all that gold into cash they could actually use.
Toby needed money, now.
"Fuck my life." She grumbled to herself, pushing herself off the bed to pace the length of her room.
There was no way she could steal that much money, at least not fast enough. She couldn't ask Barry for an extension — admitting she had lost the drugs she was given to sell would only make things worse. There was nothing in the house valuable enough to sell, and no matter how many hours she worked at Hayward's, it wouldn't be enough to meet Barry's deadline.
The only way she could get the money was if she asked someone for it. But the problem with that option was that Toby didn't know a single person who had that kind of cash just laying around.
