THE END OF DAYS

The year was 2107. It was early March on Earth, when shit hits the fan. I'm not kidding either. We're talking full on pandemonium, red alert, hit the bunkers, the crazies were right all along.

A huge meteor drawn in by the planet's gravitational pull was screaming towards Earth. The scientists always said that it was bound to happen, but the human race had that trademark mentality of; "wow, that would really suck, but there's no way that would happen to me."

The various world governments did have 'Missile Intervention' systems which were untested in such a dire situation. One by one they resulted in miserable failures, and so the world slid in to terror. The world soon stood on the edge of complete anarchy and so, the remains of the UN threw together one last ditch effort at survival.

It was a suicide mission from the start. A huge, hastily made, monstrosity of a ship. Meant to literally smash in to the meteor, causing it to break up in to smaller pieces that would 'mostly' burn up in the atmosphere. Four brave men and one brave woman perished on that ship.

Unfortunately, this plan failed as well. The speed of the projectile was too great, and the kamikaze spaceship only chipped a portion of rock off the meteor. The failed attempt at salvation also succeeded in knocking it off it's course with Eastern Europe, and redirected it almost exactly at the center of China.

The entire planet erupted in anarchy. Looting, riots, and mass suicides claimed millions of lives. Which is pretty amazing considering that the meteor hit seventy-five hours after the failed suicide mission.

The impact wiped out every living thing in China. Eventually radiation killed nearly everything on that side of the globe. The force caused huge tidal waves to wash up on every continent. Massive earthquakes wracked the planet for months on end, ripping down entire mountains and crumpling up valleys equally. Molten lava flowed freely as hundreds of volcanos erupted all over the planet. The world was then thrust in to darkness as the dust cloud from Impact Day (that's what they'll later call it) swirled its murky veil over us all. It is the end of days.

Only the very smart, very rich, and very lucky survived this and the nearly twenty years of dim twilight that followed. You either had an underground bunker or were completely on the other side of the planet, or else you almost certainly didn't make it. Of the eighty-seven billion people on Earth in 2107, only and estimated 4 billion scattered humans survive the aftermath. When the cloud finally started to subside and sunlight began to shine through in muted patches, life once again began to surface.

Fifty years after the impact, forms of government and cities began to sprout up again. The government fell in to place globally, almost overnight it seemed. In every large population it was exactly the same. An organization known as the Global Executive Movement, or GEM emerged as the new ruling power in nearly every aspect of society. The movement was led by a mysterious man known only as the Chairman, or the Puppet Master by the people in hushed whispers on the streets. Immediately they began recruiting every abled body man and woman to fight for them in their army. As GEM controlled virtually all the food supply, this was a pretty good incentive to join. Those that that couldn't fight were put to work at the ever expanding factories, manufacturing munitions, weapons, and military vehicles. Of course there were a few independent parties, or 'rebel uprisings', as GEM labeled them. These were, one by one, extinguished brutally and swiftly. Not a single woman or child returned from these 'rebel uprisings'. By the time people realized what was taking place it was already too late.

That was when people started noticing the changes. Scientists say it was due to our ozone layer becoming too thin due to excessive heat. In some places it had even worn completely away, allowing the sun's radioactive rays to shine through unchecked.
