"If you're planning on robbing more banks and trying to hurt more people, then I can't just stay out of your way. It wouldn't be right. And how do you know who I am?" Teleporter laughed as she tensed into a running position.
"That's for me to know and you never to find out. Think about what I said, Allie. If you stay out of my way, I'll keep my mouth shut about your abilities. You ignore me, and well...you might have more than a few powered people on your tail."
I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could, Teleporter had zipped away. What the hell? Who is she? Who's her boss? What did she mean by "more than a few powered people" on my tail? Are there others like me who might be able to explain my powers? Before I could think about it more, I heard a car pull into my driveway. I poked my head around the side of my house and saw Ronnie pulling up in her bright orange Subaru Forester. I saw Carter getting out of the passenger seat as I walked over to her car, trying to hide my unease at Teleporter's visit.
"Hey, Allie! What's up?" Ronnie called as she turned off her car and got out. Carter smiled at me as he walked over.
"So, how'd the date go?" Carter asked, wiggling his eyebrows. I laughed as I threw my arm around his shoulders.
"Yeah! We wanna know all the details!" Ronnie exclaimed.
"The date was really nice. We had a good time and we walked along the bay," I answered as I walked inside with Carter and Ronnie. I flashed a look over my shoulder, glancing around to make sure Teleporter hadn't come back. As soon as we were inside, Ronnie faced me, crossing her arms.
"Okay. What is up, Allie? You've been a little off since we got here." I shook my head as we headed up to my room.
"Nothing is up, guys. I'm totally good."
"Allie, we know you better than almost anyone. Ronnie and I know something is going on," Carter told me as I flopped down onto my bed.
"I'm totally fine. I swear. If something was wrong, I'd tell you." Carter dropped down into my desk chair as Ronnie sat down beside me on my bed.
"You sure?" Ronnie asked. I nodded.
"Absolutely."
A few days later, I was sitting in my history class when I heard my dad's home police radio going off. Thankfully, Mrs. Franklin doesn't require us to have our cameras on during class. And she doesn't make us have our microphones on unless we're speaking. I stood up and slipped out of my bedroom, heading downstairs.
"Attention, all available units! Beware the teleporting individual at the Mount Hope Bridge! She appears to be breaking the suspension cables! There are civilians on the bridge! Repeat: there are civilians on the bridge!"
Teleporter. It's gotta be her. I have to stop her before anyone gets hurt. I have to wear something that I won't be recognized in. I zipped around my room, trying to find something to wear. I pulled out a pair of dark blue spandex leggings with bright yellow strips that wrapped around the legs and tugged them on. I found a similarly colored dark blue long-sleeve shirt. I tugged it on and grabbed my black boots as I pulled out my black mask from one of my past Halloween costumes.
I zipped out of the house, heading for the Mount Hope Bridge. I skidded to a stop at one end of the bridge and looked across it. Oh, crap. Several of the suspension cables were flailing around as Teleporter snapped another cable, breaking it almost immediately. The bridge shook slightly and settled. Oh...this is not gonna be good. I need to act fast. I zipped to the middle of the bridge, stopping near Teleporter. The moment I stopped, I could Teleporter ripping another cable.
"Hey! Stop snapping those suspension cables!" I yelled. Teleporter whirled around to face me and sneered.
"Oh, look who it is! The snow girl who hides in the shadows! You couldn't stop me before! What are you gonna do that's gonna stop me now?" I raised my hands as I shifted positions.
"I'll do whatever it takes to save these people." Teleporter laughed.
"You'll have to catch me first!" Suddenly, she disappeared. Wait, she can go even faster?
"Unh!" I grunted as I went flying backward. I slammed into the hood of a car with a crash and hit the bridge.
"Ah!" I looked up and saw a couple of people in the car I'd crashed into. They all cowered in their seats, huddling together as much as they could.
"I'm gonna get you off this bridge safely," I told them, trying to hide the fear in my voice. I groaned as I stood up, turning to face Teleporter. She stood in the middle of the bridge, sneering at me.
"You just don't go down, do you?" I shook my head as I stride toward her.
"Nope."
We zipped toward each other, with her going faster than me. I saw her pull her hand back and ducked, but not in time. She clipped the back of my head and I skidded across the pavement, scraping my hands as I tried to stop. I hissed in pain as I knelt on the ground and looked at my hands. Within seconds, my scrapes were gone.
"You are all alone, shadow and snow girl! I'm more powerful than you and I have a team!" Teleporter yelled. I looked up and saw she was gone. I could hear her running around me, but I couldn't see her.
"If you have a team, why aren't they here?" I answered as I tried to pinpoint her location. I heard Teleporter snort and jumped to my feet, whirling around. If she'd been standing behind me, she wasn't there now.
"Because I'm just the distraction," she answered smugly. I froze.
"The distraction for what?" Suddenly, Teleporter's fist connected with my chest. I gasped and everything went black.
When I came to, I was drifting down. Where...where am I? I moved my eyes from side to side as I tried to take a breath. I coughed and immediately breathed in more water. My eyes widened as I realized where I was. Mount Hope Bay! I have to save the people on the bridge! My instincts kicked in and zipped out of the water, coughing. As I looked down at the bridge, Teleporter stared up at me.
"No...way."
Huh? I looked down at myself and realized I was hovering in the air. I'm...I'm flying. I'm flying! I flew down toward Teleporter and knocked her to the side. She crashed into a car and hit the pavement as I landed on the bridge.
"Don't ever underestimate me again, Teleporter." Teleporter sneered as she looked up at me.
"Trust me, I don't plan on making that mistake again."
