Maeve?? Maeve Green is Teleporter?!?
"Please don't tell Hannah. She can't know that our dad..." Maeve hesitated. "That our dad forced me to use my powers to steal money from banks and then to..."
"To try to kill me." Maeve nodded, looking ashamed.
"Where's...Phlegethon?" I whirled around and saw he was gone.
"He's gonna be a problem."
"Yup," Maeve said. I turned back to Maeve.
"You know, you could come back to headquarters with me. Hannah would never have to know who you are."
"I...I can't be near Hannah right now. Not while I've got a target on my back. Especially when our dad is the reason I can't even go see my mom. I can give you my number so you can text me about what's happening, but I can't see Hannah. Not yet." I nodded.
"Okay. Well, if you ever wanna come to a meeting, ask me and I'll tell you where we are." Maeve nodded and then zipped off. I took off into the air and flew back to the Annex. As soon as I got there, someone spoke over our intercom system.
"Hi, Allie Price. I'm Director Jackson. I have been watching you and what you've been doing." I glanced at Ronnie, but she shrugged, a sheepish look on her face. Whoever hacked our system is better than she is.
"Is this a recorded message?" I asked Ronnie.
"I can assure you, Allie, this is no recorded message. I am speaking to you from a secret government base for an organization that protects the planet from threats to Earth by people or aliens on Earth, as well as those not from Earth." My eyebrows shot up.
"Like the organization that the A—"
"Yes, just like them. You would be part of a new generation of heroes and you would also be the first recruit on the team. Are you interested, Allie Price?" I narrowed my eyes as I looked at the center console that controlled the intercom.
"I'll need to think about it. Why would you need me to join if there's general world peace right now? Earth isn't being attacked by anyone or anything right now."
"Allie, there is more happening behind the scenes than you realize. There is an unknown threat rising and currently, AEGIS doesn't know how to fight it."
"So, your plan is to gather the Earth's most powerful heroes and have us go in blind into a fight against a threat that we know nothing about?" When Director Jackson didn't answer, I continued. "Director Jackson, I'm gonna need some time to think about it. Also, right now, I need to be here, in Rhode Island, so I can make sure that Phlegethon doesn't make any moves, as directed by his mysterious boss."
"You have a year to decide."
Why is AEGIS really so interested in me? What even is AEGIS? Why haven't I heard of them before? Why am I so important to them? There are other heroes in the world, like Blackout, or Hourglass, or The Gryphon, or The Silver Sorceress. Why not ask one of them? I looked at Ronnie as she started typing on the console.
"Hey, Ronnie. Anything on our...intercom hacker?" Ronnie grinned and winked at me.
"Already on it. I've had a decryption and hacking protocol running since Director Jackson started speaking." After about twenty minutes, Ronnie waved me over. I heard footsteps behind me and saw Hannah, Dr. Abbasi and Carter walking over, too. "So, Director Rachel Jackson is a former military officer. Although she was seemingly the best in her class, she never obtained a title higher than Master Sergeant. She was enlisted by the CIA in 1990 and after that point, all of her files are completely sealed. As in, I can't even decrypt or hack into them. They literally cannot be accessed."
"Hm...so who is she exactly? And what is AEGIS?" I asked.
"I'll have to keep looking around, but so far, I'm not seeing anything on this supposed organization. I would stay cautious until we really know who this organization is and who Director Jackson is." I flashed Ronnie a look.
"And maybe install a program that keeps anyone from hacking in?" Ronnie nodded as Hannah stepped closer, lightly setting a hand on her shoulder
"I can help with that if you need it, Ronnie." Ronnie smiled up at Hannah and nodded.
"Yeah, I'd appreciate the help."
"Great. So, let's get to work. Then whatever isn't finished can be dealt with tomorrow." Everyone nodded at me.
"Got it. Also, I have a heat signature detection program that I can install into our console to track Phlegethon." I raised an eyebrow at Ronnie. She laughed and shrugged.
"Oh, come on. You know I applied to all of the tech colleges. Rochester Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic, Columbia, Yale, you know. All of those."
"Tech nerd," I muttered teasingly. Ronnie and Carter laughed.
"What does that make me?" Carter joked.
"Fashion nerd," I answered, grinning. I turned to Hannah, who'd been working with Dr. Abbasi. "And medical nerd." I slung an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer. "We're gonna need all of those to beat whoever is behind Phlegethon going after me."
"And...Teleporter." I glanced at Hannah.
"Well...Teleporter...is actually on our side now."
