Chapter 1:

Mystery Boy

I ran as fast as I could, stumbling over my feet. "Get back here!" I heard shouting from behind me. I kept running despite the constant yells for me to stop. I felt my chest pounding and my legs beginning to give out. I was always good at running but jeez. This guy won't give up. I turned quickly around a corner but so did he. Why won't he stop? I kept running until I stopped. I decided that whatever this guy would do to me couldn't be worse than this chase. I put my hands on my knees and began to finally take a deep breath in and a breath out. I began to pant. I had no more strength or stamina to keep running. Whatever was waiting for me when I was caught, could not be worse. When he reached me, he pulled out the handcuffs. I looked up at him and a sly grin-like smirk appeared on my face. "That was tons of fun!" I spoke. "But since you caught me, I guess the fun must come to an end, isn't that right, Mr. Detective?"

Months Ago.

"Damn it!" Makoto grunted, rubbing his temples while sighing. "This guy... How does he do it?!"

Makoto looked seriously upset. Kyoko then walked into the room. Makoto looked up from his desk and at her. "Mr. Naegi. I'm deeply sorry to disturb your work but I would like you to meet one of our newest employees, Mr. Saihara." Kyoko introduced.

The young boy looked nervous, he didn't seem like the confident type of boy, but it was his first day here, so no one can judge him yet.

"Hi... I'm Shuichi Saihara, it is a pleasure working with you today..." Shuichi greeted.

"Greetings Mr. Saihara, it is an honor to be working with you as well." Makoto addressed.

Shuichi smiled softly, before covering his eyes with a hat. The hat was a grayish-blackish color with white stripes on one side of the hat. He seemed to avoid eye contact as much as possible.

Makoto then looked surprised. "Wait a second! Aren't you that kid that solved one of the toughest cases in town!?" Makoto asked.

Shuichi was a bit shocked by the sudden excitement in Makoto's voice. "Uhm. I guess so.. Yes." Shuichi replied.

Makoto got up from his seat with an almost relieved smile on his face. "Thank goodness. Ms. Kirigiri.. Do you think Mr. Saihara can help us with this case?" Makoto asked.

Shuichi was slightly confused, and Kyoko seemed deep in thought about the suggestion. "Well, it simply depends on whether or not Shuichi is up for the task."

Kyoko turned to look at Shuichi and looked serious. "Mr. Saihara. Will you help us with this case?" Kyoko asked, putting a hand on his shoulder.

Shuichi looked at Kyoko but avoided eye contact. "...Well, what's the case?" Shuichi asked. "Ah, right. I forgot you haven't been fully informed about it all." Kyoko began to explain.

"So, a thief is going around causing trouble for everyone. He steals vulnerable items and expensive things. He uses illusions to get away. Most of the time he teases the cops as if he wants to be caught just not by them. Most of the time he's gone before we can even get to the scene. But here's one thing we realized. He leaves a card. A card every time he steals something. He leaves a card that usually says, "Catch you later!" or "Too slow!" and most of the time "See ya later alligator."
