new year's gift

this new year
i will gift
a poem to someone important.
I'll keep it short because
when I use too many words,
it tends to ruin the effect.
I'll try to let it
be imperfect at places
because when I edit it obsessively,
the poem changes
into something else.
I do that a lot.
Add words,
then delete them
and its never quite
what it had set out to be.
And I never quite
get to appreciate it
for what it has been.

so I'll leave this one be,
just as is,
before I fold it in half,
wrap it in a pink ribbon,
and hand it over
to myself.
