All the third years were gathered in the entrance hall, dressed in light jackets and hats for the late fall weather, today was Halloween, meaning that it was the third years first trip to Hogsmeade.
"Trust me, it's not all that it's cracked up to be, Lyra" Matteo said, the group was standing off to the side of the hall as the rest of the third years started to file out.
Lyra couldn't get the Matron to sign her form, she thought about forging her signature but thankfully Pansy had reminded her that the form was laced with enchantments that prevented forged signatures, plus Mcgonagall would have been able to tell anyways.
" Yeah, mum took me once, it wasn't all that special" Draco chimed in, feeling incredibly sorry for his cousin.
"Its alright guys, I'll find some way to go" Lyra replied, her friends were much more upset about the situation then she was, besides - there must be some sort of secret passageway or something.
"We'll bring you loads of sweets back from Honeydukes," Pansy said, her expression carrying a slight frown. Pansy cherished creating memories, especially core moments, so the fact that she wouldn't be able to experience her first Hogsmeade trip with her best friend left her feeling upset.
"Yeah, we'll get you every chocolate frog they have," Blaise nodded, trying to cheer Lyra up.
"I'll see you later, dont worry about me," Lyra said, as the group of Slytherins reluctantly started to walk out the hall, watching as Lyra retreated back into the empty castle.
An hour later, Lyra found herself standing on the creaky wooden bridge off the side of Hogwarts looking down onto the black lake, with a cigarette between her fingers.
"Those will kill you, you know" spoke a soft voice, lyra turned her head to see professor lupin walking down the bridge towards her.
"so i've been told" Lyra responds chuckling. Lupin couldn't help the feeling that rose in his chest, it was like Deja Vu.
"those will kill you, you know" Remus said, he and Sirius were sitting under a tree down near the Black Lake.
"So i've been told," Sirius laughed, exhaling a cloud of smoke "but it hasn't happened yet"
Lupin shook his head, "why aren't you at Hogsmeade with the other third years?" he asked, looking at the girl.
"I don't have my form signed, Minnie wont let me go" Lyra says, stubing the end of her cigarette against the wood, creating a dark brown circular shaped burn on the bridge.
Lupin smiled at the familiar nickname for Mcgonagall, reminding him of what they used to call her when he went to Hogwarts.
"Well it's really not that special, there's only really three good shops" Lupin says, trying to make Lyra feel like she hasn't missed out on anything.
"Yeah, i'm not that upset about it, i'll live" lyra shrugged, "plus this just means i don't have to spend any money" she grinned.
"always looking on the bright side, aren't you?" lupin noticed "just like your mother"
"you knew my mum professor?" Lyra said, now completely facing Lupin, she'd never heard anything about her mother, to Lyra her mother wasn't even a distant memory but more of a stranger.
"Yes i knew Estella, we were good friends when we attended hogwarts, she was like a sister to me" Lupin confirmed, the sadness in his voice, making Lyra furrowed her brows, it had never really occurred to her how much her mother must have meant to other people.
"What was she like?" Lyra asked, she felt comfortable around professor lupin, knowing that he was friends with her mother, but she also felt a little embarrassed, not knowing anything about her mum.
"Your mother was incredibly kind, i don't think she ever had an enemy in our whole 7 years of schooling," Lupin shook his head, looking down at the rickety wood panels they stood on," She had this warm quality about her, where she could always cheer up a room, no matter how sollum the mood was before,"
Lyra listened intently as Lupin spoke, she could sense the deep admiration he held for her mother.
"She was the most loyal person i have ever met," Lupin continued "a true gryffindor"
"Oh, come on," lyra said lightheartedly, rolling her eyes, of course her mum was a gryffindor "I was hoping she was a slytherin" lyra continued, responding to lupins amused look.
Lupin smiled, "she was a gryffindor through and through" he explained, a tight feeling in his chest arising once it hit him that Lyra doesn't know the first thing about her parents, he couldn't help but feel his anger towards his best friend grow more and more.
"I'm afraid I have to go; I have a meeting with Professor Snape in my office," Lupin said, glancing at the cracked watch on his wrist. "but if you ever want to talk, my door is always open".
Lyra nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in Lupin's offer. "Thank you, Professor"
Later that day, once the sun had set, Lyra was sitting on the floor of the the slytherin common room in front of the fireplace, waiting for her friends to get back from hogsmeade,
The creaking of the common room door heralded the return of her friends. Pansy, Theo, draco, matteo and Blaise entered, their faces flushed from the chilly evening air. Pansy, practically buzzing with excitement, made her way toward Lyra, holding multiple bags.
"Lyra you won't believe what we got for you in Hogsmeade" pansy exclaimed as she reached where Lyra was sitting, dumping the contents of the the Honeydukes bag on the table in front on her.
"Holy shit, you really did get me every chocolate frog they had," Lyra laughed, looking at the array of sweets laid out in front of her. As her friends shared tales of their day in Hogsmeade, Lyra couldn't help but feel a twinge of gratitude that she hadn't gotten her form signed. If she had, she might not have discovered newfound information about her mother.
