[Year 2008]
"Hi, I'm Jeon Somi. I hope we can all be good friends." ten-year-old Somi softly said as she pulled a feeble smile.
For a girl who lived in another country and now living in a foreign one, it wasn't hard for everyone to notice her. Somi watched the eyes of her classmates bounce at her space. She can't even tell if those are welcoming smile but one thing for sure, she's not comfortable with it.
Somi went to her seat after her teacher allowed her to settle down. Even if she's already in her chair, the eyes of her classmates are still on her. She wonders how long she has to send a smile that always turns into a shy one. This is gonna be along exhausting day.
"Hey."
Somi turned her head to the other girl who was sitting next to her. She'd be lying if she'd say that she's happy that there's someone already up to talk to her. Because that's the last thing she wants to do.
"H-hey." She shot back in the same manner. Hearing her voice crack makes her want to grimace but she kept her smile on. The other girl doesn't seem fazed, unlike the other students' reaction towards the new student.
"Do you have an extra pencil or something?"
Oh
"Uhh, yeah, I guess so. Do you need one?" Somi asked.
Now the table has turned, it seems like she wants to talk more to the girl.
The other girl nodded in return. She watched Somi dig into her bag and when she found a extra pencil, she gave it to the girl.
"Thanks, I'll return it later—"
"No worries, I'm Somi, by the way."
For some reason the other girl was surprised. Somi noticed it too, though she wonder what makes the girl reacted that way. It's not like she didn't hear her introduce herself in front, right?
"Oh, yeah, Miya." the other girl said as she rendered a close-lip smile.
The time past by before they could notice it. It's lunch time and again, anxiety crawl on Somi's skin. She really doesn't feel any comfort that everyone wants to be with her. Asking her if she wants to eat with them or sit on the same table with them. It's safe to assume that everryone already like her. But she's not thrilled about it and she has her reason why.
Somi's gaze landed on a particular person who's sitting at the other table by herself. But her thoughts were cut by unwanted attention around her.
"Why did you transfer here, Somi?" her classmate asked.
Somi sent a shy smile once again and shrugged her shoulder.
"Dad works here." She simply said, she wished her classmate wouldn't ask more about it but of course, the universe decided to pull out a joke on her on her first day in her new school.
"Oh! What's your father's work? My dad's a chief."
the other classmates started to say their father's job too and it makes Somi a lot more uncomfortable. She keeps on shifting on her sit, wishing she could eat at peace but those are just wishing thinking.
"Uh, Dad works in the office."
"That's cool, how about your mom?"
And that's where she wants to leave. Somi tried to think of a response but her mind is stuck somewhere else, thinking of things she shouldn't have.
