After that whole fiasco, Xiu went with her childhood friends towards the public restroom. Therefore, she also separated from Shen. The venue was extensive, and there were many offices in this place. Xiu didn't know where they were supposed to go after this, and neither did her childhood friends.
It's a good thing they saw the driver of the van by the public restroom. After they each finished their business, they followed the driver towards the place where they were supposed to wait.
You can think of the process of getting this educational assistance as if they were in a campus-wide roll calling. They would have to line up according to who their payroll carrier is. Aside from that, the lineup must also be in alphabetical order.
When they reached the place where their payroll carrier was, Xiu immediately saw Shen. It wasn't because of anything else. Shen was quite tall, and her (soft) short hair was noticeable. In their University, if a female student decided to take the BS Criminology program, they had to either put their hair up in a military bun or cut it short.
Xiu remembered that Shen's display profile on Weibo was a picture of her with her long hair; she was indeed beautiful. However, this short-haired Shen looks prettier in Xiu's eyes. She also doesn't know why. She just felt that short hair really suited Shen.
Speaking of, Xiu checked her private message and found a red dot on it. There were messages from Shen.
Shen: Xiao-meimei, where are you?
Shen: We're already lined up.
After Xiu saw that, she walked up to Shen. "Hey, sorry, I didn't notice that you sent me a message. We (she and her childhood friends) went to the public restroom."
Shen looked at her, smiled, and gave a nod, indicating that she understood.

Their payroll carrier was a guy surnamed An. Xiu found out that Shen was surnamed Cai; therefore, Shen was directly behind the guy. Unfortunately for Xiu, her surname is Tan, so she's far behind. If this line is based on height, she'll definitely be at the front. Though... perhaps being small isn't something to be proud of.
They waited for the van at 5 o'clock, and the van arrived at 5:45 AM. After settling down, they set off at about 6:00 AM. They arrived at City B, in this big venue called the Capitol, at half past 7. The staff said that the start of the actual giving of educational assistance was 7:00 AM. However, when they arrived, the staff were still organizing things.
As they waited and waited, the sun was already high up in the sky and burning them with its rays. As Xiu was with Shen, and her childhood friends brought an umbrella themselves, Xiu offered her umbrella to share with Shen.
It was more reasonable for taller people to hold the umbrella because when Xiu opened the umbrella, Shen naturally took it and held it above their heads, shielding them from the sun.
Perhaps it was because Xiu was used to being the one taking care of others, so this occasional act of care from strangers made her heart flutter with sweetness. And perhaps... maybe... she and Shen could now be called acquaintances.

Xiu had already known that she swings both ways ever since she was in her second year of middle school. It was because there was a female schoolmate who confessed to her at the time. Although Xiu rejected the female schoolmate, she also realized that she seemed to be the same as that schoolmate—but she still also liked guys.
To be honest, Xiu was very surprised. The version of Xiu in middle school was what Xiu considered the worst version of herself. She had lots of insecurities, an obvious one being her height, and she was bullied because of this. Therefore, she rejected the schoolmate.
