November
I groaned, looking at my shoulder in the mirror. I was in my room, standing in front of my full-length mirror, staring at the purple bruise that was throbbing on my shoulder. My hair was a rat's nest, and my eyes were red and puffy.
I shook my head, looking around my room.
Eugene then came barging in. "Hey, Y/n. I need help with my English assignment." He looked at my shoulder. "You might wanna cover that up."
I rolled my eyes. "Why can't you do your own damn assignment, Eugene?"
"I do, usually. You know I just need help with English."
I sighed. "And by, help, do you mean you want me to do it?"
"Yup. And careful, because Dad really wants me to pass my classes."
I winced, my shoulder suddenly throbbing even worse. "Yeah, yeah. I got it. Just send me the assignment, and I'll do it tonight."
Eugene grinned. "Thanks!" And he left.
I sighed, looking in the mirror again, before grabbing a red and blue flannel and throwing it on. I was wearing dark blue shorts, a black tank-top, and the flannel.
I checked my phone, seeing texts from Aidan, my best friend.
Aidan: Hey! Where r u? Im at our meeting spot!
Me: Sorry, my dad had me do something. I'm on my way!
I grabbed my purse, which carried my notepad, pencils and wallet, before stuffing my phone in there as well, putting it over my shoulders and running out the door.
I went down the hallway from my room, jogging on the presteen shiny floors and past the flawless light grey walls. I ran down the spiralling flight of stairs, which were painted a very realistic looking gold.
Once at the bottom, I headed for the doors, before a tall figure blocked my way. I gulped, staring up at the taller, more muscular and scary version of Eugene. "Father," I said kindly.
"Y/n. Where are you going?"
"To meet up with Aidan."
My dad rolled his eyes. He never liked Aidan, just because he's gay. "I see. I trust you'll soon be finished with Eugene's assignment?"
"Of course. I'll finish it once I get back. I won't be gone long."
"Good. See to it."
I nodded, before going around my father and outside. I got into the small silver car that my dad had bought Eugene and me when we'd turned 16.
I drove out of our property, past the other rich houses, and to the park. I parked the car and got out, speed walking until I saw a bench perfectly overlooking the field. I sat down beside the weirdo already there.
"Hey," I said, taking my seat.
"There you are!" Aidan said, shaking his head. "You took your time!"
I chuckled. "Sorry. Like I said, my dad held me back."
Aidan had lightly tanned skin and black hair. He was wearing a dark blue tank-top and black shorts.
Aidan nodded. "Jesus, girl. What are you doing in that flannel? It's, like, a billion degrees out here!"
I smiled and nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "The flannel pulls the outfit together."
Aidan rolled his eyes, grinning. "And that's great and all. But not in this heat!"
I shook my head, laughing. "Oh, whatever."
"Anyway," he continued, looking at me. "This is going to be the last hot day of the year. And, a little birdie told me that your brother is having a pool party."
I groaned. "Great. My parents are leaving for the night, so I guess Eugene thought that'd be a good idea."
Aidan shrugged. "Are you kidding? I think it's a great idea! End the summer with a bang!"
"Summer was supposed to be over a while ago," I grunted. "It's November 3rd."
Aidan shook his head. "I will never understand why you love the cold so much."
I shrugged, not wanting to answer the question. It's a lot easier to hide your arms when everyone's wearing coats and sweaters.
"Anyway. We should be shopping right now to find us some cute little bathing suits."
I rolled my eyes. "Not happening. I already have a bathing suit, first of all. And second of all, I'm not going to the party. I have a lot of homework."
"Oh come on!" Aidan scoffed. "You're smart. I doubt you have that much."
I shrugged. "Actually, I do. I've got chemistry and Eugene's assignment."
Aidan sighed. "Come on! Flash can do his own work!"
"No, apparently he can't. And if he fails the class... I get... uh, grounded."
"You get grounded? If he fails his class?"
"Yeah... you know my dad. He wants to make sure we're both doing well. If I don't help him and he fails... I get grounded and can't exactly hang out with you."
"Alright, alright. What are you doing here then?"
"Trying to hang out with you?"
"We're gonna go back to your house. I'm gonna help you with chemistry and Flash's thing. Once we're done that, we can get ready for the party."
I groaned. "Fine."
Aidan got up, grabbing my hand and pulling me to my feet. "Your hands are sweaty," he said, wiping his hand on his shirt.
I snorted. "Thanks."
Aidan shook his head, before we started heading for my car.
We both got in, and I drove back to my house.
"Are your parents gone yet?" Aidan asked.
I shrugged. "No idea. But my dad's never home anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem either way."
Aidan nodded.
My father was always very rude to Aidan. He was very homophobic, and very sexist. But what can I say? Aidan's my best friend. I love him more than anything. And I hate my dad more than anything. So...
We got to my house, and got out, heading to my room. Once there, I closed the door, pulled a folder out of my backpack, and turned my computer on. There were a few parts of my work that Aidan and I had to really think about, but we finished pretty quickly. Then I opened Eugene's assignment, and we finished that in two hours. It was a long report, and I had to make a few grammar and spelling mistakes so Eugene wouldn't get caught. I wrote it just like it was coming out of his mouth. It would get him a B-, easily, which was perfect.
Once we were finished that, we went to my backyard and looked at the pool. Eugene was setting up lights to surround it. Aiden hung back by the door while I walked towards my brother.
"Hey, Y/n, give me a hand, would ya?"
I made my way over to my brother and held the latter he was on.
"Thanks," he said once he was finished as he climbed down. "What do you guys think?" he asked.
I shrugged. "I think it looks fine. I finished your report, by the way. Should get you a B-."
"Perfect," he grinned.
"How many people are coming to this party, exactly? I didn't even know we were having one until Aidan told me."
"Don't know. Hopefully a lot. Although I'm not sure how you're gonna wear a bathing suit." he gestured to my shoulder.
I shrugged. "I don't feel like swimming anyway."
"Right, right."
I headed back over to Aiden. "Can we go to your place?" I asked.
Aidan nodded and we headed out. We took off in my car, and got to his apartment building, heading up the stairs to where his place was situated.
