The last day of school finally rolled around, and Eugene's party was in full swing. "Y/n!" Betty called, waving at me. "Finally, I found you!" She took my arm and led me to her group of friends. "You guys know Y/n Thompson, right?" she asked them.
I gave a small wave, and they all seemed hesitant at first. "Just so you guys know, I try not to associate with my brother. He's a real prick."
That made them laugh.
Aiden and Jason joined us soon after. I was determined not to get drunk at that party, which was actually just as fun as getting drunk, without the stupid mistakes. It was just as fun watching everyone else act stupid while I was still in my right mind.
"Hey, Y/n," a nervous voice said behind me.
I turned around, rolling my eyes when I saw who it was. "Parker." I nodded at him, before looking at his companion. "Ned!" I smiled. "I'm so glad you could make it."
I could see Betty and Aiden watching me out of the corner of my eye.
"Uhh, thanks," Ned said awkwardly. "I think I see MJ. Let's go, Peter."
They walked away, and Betty stared at me.
"What?" I asked.
Betty sighed. "Why are you so mean to him? He obviously likes you."
I snorted. "No, he doesn't. He just likes annoying me."
"Why would you think that? What's he ever done to you?"
I closed my eyes. "It's a long story, Betty. I don't feel like getting into it right now."
"Okay... But I still think you should be nicer."
"Whatever." Even when Betty was tipsy, she was smart. If she knew the whole story, I was sure she'd change her opinion.
But everyone else just got drunker and drunker. Jason was the first to leave, still completely sober. After a few more hours, everyone else left too. Alex drove Aiden home, being Aiden's and a few others' DD.
And as more people trickled out, I began to realise that Betty didn't have anyone to get her home. "Betty? Did you drive yourself here?" I asked.
"I did," she slurred. "Don't worry, I'm not that drunk."
Considering I was holding her up, I chose not to believe her. "Yeah, no. You're not driving tonight," I nodded.
"Fine. I'll call a cab."
I wasn't letting her risk calling a cab and getting a skeevy driver. She was drunk as shit and you never know what could happen. Especially in New York City. "No," I told her. "You can just spend the night here. That way I can take care of you."
"Aww, Y/n," she grinned. "You're too sweet."
"Uh-huh. Come on. Let's get to bed."
"But the party isn't over!"
"Trust me, it'll be over soon. Come on." I helped her walk up the stairs and laid her down in my bed.
She curled up under the covers, and I went back downstairs to grab her a large glass of water. I stayed awake that night, wanting to be ready to help her if she needed it.
I read a book, using the moon through my window as my only source of light.
Betty jumped up three times in the middle of the night, frantically asking where my bathroom was. I pulled her there quickly and held her hair back while she puked, then made her drink some water.
The next morning, she woke up with a groan. "Oh, I feel like shit."
"You puked three times last night."
She looked at me sitting on the floor by the window with my book. "Oh my god, did you sleep at all last night?"
I shrugged. "I dozed off a few times."
"Y/n, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to keep you up! You should've just called me a cab!"
"I wasn't risking anything. Besides, I like doing reading all nighters. It's fun. Now come on. I'll make you some pancakes."
I led her downstairs, and she sat on the counter. I went to the bathroom and brought her some Advil and water.
"Thanks," she said, taking it.
I nodded and made pancakes for us and Eugene. "So, now can you tell me why you hate Peter Parker so much?" she asked.
I sighed. "Fine. You know when we were younger, we were close friends. Then we started drifting apart, which was okay. Sad, but okay. Then last year, we... had a drunken makeout session."
"But he liked Liz last year."
"I know. But... maybe I liked him a little. And after we kissed... he never talked to me again. Until all of a sudden he started this year. Convenient, considering Liz moved away."
Betty shook her head. "That's terrible. I'm sorry. I should've given you the benefit of the doubt. That guy doesn't deserve you to even look at him!"
I chuckled. "Thanks, Betty. I'm glad we're friends now."
She smiled. "Me too."
"Oh, I forgot something."
"What?"
"I made out with him again when we were drunk at my brother's last party. He tried talking to me about that one, but he's too late. I won't be his second choice just because his first moved away."
Betty nodded. "That's fair. I respect that."
"Thanks. But let's change the subject. Do you like anyone? I know Jason has a bit of a thing for you..."
"Oh, god," she chuckled. "No, I'm not really interested in anyone right now. And yeah, I know Jason likes me, but we're just friends."
"Ugh, fine. No one else?"
"Nope."
Betty left after breakfast, knowing that her parents would probably want to have her home. We said our goodbyes and she headed out.
I had a boring Christmas, like every year. I got some new makeup (mostly things that would help cover bruises), and the newest iPhone. I guess that seems pretty great to everyone else, but my parents didn't even try to get to know me to think about what I'd like. They just went with makeup and phone.
For New Year's Eve, I slept over at Aiden's place. His parents always had a little party, which was mostly full of adults, but it was better than whatever my parents were doing.
I was almost happy when school started again. It gave me something to do and a reason not to be at home.
