Marinette wakes up to the sound of buzzing. She checks her phone, but there's no call. Then she remembers the phone that Felix gave her and reaches for it.
"Hello?" She speaks.
"Ladybug, we're going to a masquerade. " Felix says from the other end.
"What? "She says, taking a minute to process it. "A ball?" She furrows her brows. "This is supposed to be an investigation or something, why would we go to a ball?"
"Because there is the only place that we can reach our first suspect. The son of my father's former right-hand man. I need you to somehow get invited to his estate, and I'll take it from there. Can you do that?"
"Are you asking me to make friends with someone?"
"I'm afraid not. See, he and I never really got along, whatever I have he wants. So naturally, I think you can assume what I'm thinking. However, if that dastard dares lay a hand on you, I hope you know I'll be there to stop it. I know it's not ideal to ask this of you, but I won't let anything happen. I just need you to trust me."
"Wait, how am I involved in this at all and what do you mean by whatever you have he wants?"
"Oh, did I forget to tell you? You're my fiancé for the time being."
"Fiancé?! Dude, you're in like high school! What kind of plan are you making?" She says, completely waking up due to his call.
"Well, I'm not permitted to bring my girlfriend. I need to be engaged or married to my partner, and I chose the best option-" The phone beeps. Felix takes the phone away from his ear and in front of his face to check if his theory was right, and it was. She hung up on him.
"Marinette?" Alya asks, checking if she is ok. "I thought you said you we're going to sleep in today. And also, I'm sorry I couldn't help but overhear, but are you... engaged?"
"NO!" She screams as she violently gets out of bed. "No, never. No."
Alya laughs. "Ok, noted. You are strongly against romance of any sort."
"I never said that!" Marinette answers.
"Uh, it was so obvious you didn't need to say it."
"What are you talking about? I don't hate romance. It's cute and stuff."
"Yeah, real convincing Marinette."
Marinette starts thinking about how she is supposed to charm a man, a dirty and probably very ugly man. Then she gets the inspired idea to ask Alya.
"Well, actually that was my friend who called. She uh, asking me a question. So she has this crush on a guy you know? And she is asking me how she is supposed to..." Marinette thinks about how to word this without it sounding like her story.
She hated this with every bone in her body. She didn't hate romance, she actually thought it was cute. She loved watching dramas about it on her time off, and the thought of falling in love with someone. The thought was fun, and she loved romance. She just didn't believe it to be suited for her. Just a fraction of her wished that it was suited for her though, to feel someone sweep you off your feet would be intriguing, wouldn't it?
"To flirt with him?" Alya completes her sentence for her.
"Mhm." Marinette says, brushing her hair out of her face.
"Is your friend friends with this guy?"
"No, they have never talked before."
"mhm. And is this their first-time meeting, or have they met before but just never talked?" Alya questions further, her tone growing suspicious.
"Uh..." Marinette was too tired for all these unnecessary questions so she decided she would just base this all on one of her favorite books.
"They have never talked before, but she has liked him for a while."
"How does this guy look like to her?"
"Uhhh" She thinks back to the book's description. "Blonde, and green eyes, and a male, and..."
"No, ugh. That's not what I'm asking. I'm asking how your friend views him. Does she get nervous around him, does she like him only a little bit, or does she see stars with him."
"umm, I guess she get's nervous around him and stuff. Like she can't mess up because she's only going to have this one chance to talk with him before his annoying 'fangirl' comes and stops her. Basically, she needs it to happen perfectly in one exchange."
"Right, and does your friend look like you?"
"Yeah, she is my sister. We look super similar." Marinette is answering all her questions, but Alya didn't answer hers.
"Ok.."
Marinette looks at Alya her eyes suspicious. "Ok, whatever." Marinette says. "I have to go to work. Thanks. That didn't help at all." Marinette gets out of bed, and gets ready.
Again, she starts to head to the diner. And again, upon opening the door she get's surprised. by Adrien.
"Marinette!"
"I DONT SPEAK ENGLISH." She screams in a Chinese accent. This is what she normally did with solicitors.
"What?" Adrien asks, approaching her. He is wearing his sport uniform, his hair is all messy, and he looked like he was glowing. She turns away from him and reaches into her bag to hand him a towel.
"Ew. Why are you all sweaty- Anyways, why are you here um... Adrien?"
"I wanted to apologize. For what happened with Chloe."
"She can say sorry herself, don't speak for her. And why are you doing this?"
"As I just said, to say sorry? It's only right."
"Well, thanks for your sorry. Um, bye!"
"Wait!" He says, and it seems almost like a replay of their first encounter.
"What?!"
"Do you think I could tag along? I'm kinda... bored!" He says, but he wasn't doing this just because he was bored. He was doing this because he had just quit his life long dedication of fencing. The sport that he dedicated the last 17 years of his life doing. He had just quit, given up, let go. And he didn't really know what else to do. Somehow he ended up wandering to her dorm.
He paled at the feeling in his chest, the feeling of regret and uncertainty. He didn't know the girl before him but he could care less, all he knew was that he didn't want to be alone. Or rather that he couldn't be, and he supposed she would be able to keep him company while not trying to talk to him. He could be with someone and not have to talk to them, wasn't that a perfect solution?
He could feel his gulping, and his fingers shaking as he held onto the towel she had handed him. He could only hope that she would say yes.
"No. Sorry, it's nothing personal but no."
It was actually. She hated those stupid blondes and their stupid beautiful eyes. She hated that once she hoped that those beautiful eyes were a reflection of the person. She had once hoped to be friends with Chloe. Marinette thought that Chloe was straight from a movie, she was beautiful. And she thought she was kind.
The same for Felix, when she first saw him she though that he was a gentleman, someone trust worthy with a rare yet kind heart. But she was wrong, about both of them. So now that Adrien had entered her life, she wasn't expecting the movie type of fictional character anymore with a heart of gold.
