Over the past year, Wattpad has been taking down more and more stories due to copywriter infringement and they're getting more strict about it...leading to deleted profiles too.
Here are some things you need to make sure you are thinking about.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆ Read the books, watch the movies books will always be taken down as they're a clear copyright infringement on Wattpad. I suggest putting these books on AO3 instead, maybe Quotev. Every person I've known to write these had them taken down.
🦋 AO3 is fully fan-named unlike Wattpad so it's not as regulated. 🦋 Back-up all work onto things like google docs/word. 🦋 Have a backup account that people know to follow just in case.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆ Your book can't contain too much of the original book as it'll be picked up on. This is happening a lot more and is always called a 'clear copyright infringement' by Wattpad customer support. You can help avoid this by:
🌻 Rewriting paragraphs in your own style completely. 🌻 Sticking to a chapter having under 30% of the original book/movie. 🌻 Don't have your OC replace what a character is saying, make sure it's their own voice! 🌻 Writing AU so most of it is different.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆ According to Wattpad support, giving credit to another author for using their work or saying 'not owned by me' does not give you the right to post it. Technically all fanfiction is illegal and even though people like J.K Rowling have said fanfiction is okay, Wattpad don't care about that. They want clear proof. Be careful when:
🌿 Using ideas from Tumblr 🌿 Translating a book 🌿 Always screenshot permission 🌿 Don't claim work as your own if it's not, even if it's from inspo!
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆ It's not always the author of the original that gets your book taken down! Anyone can report you if they think you copied another author as well as companies asking for it to be taken down to. So, if you have permission, get it out in writing.
🌹 As a note, Wattpad customer support will only send you a copy and paste message if you ask them why your book got taken down. I know around ten people that all got the same message when they asked how they could avoid getting their book taken down in future.
