When Billie woke up, her father's warning echoed in her ears: Stay close and keep your gun ready.

She sat wedged between Joel and Tess, eyes darting to the sleeping girl nearby. At any moment, she expected Ellie to transform into a snarling, infected monster. But nothing happened, not even a twitch. If Ellie really weren't immune, she'd have turned by now. Billie's gut told her that this was why Marlene guarded Ellie so closely. But Tess and Joel? They were hardened, cynical. Nobody had ever survived infection, and hope seemed nothing more than a dangerous distraction.

Ellie stirred awake, rubbing her eyes as she took in the overgrown, moss-covered room. When she looked over to meet their gaze, she was greeted by three guns leveled directly at her.

"Morning." Ellie greeted, inching closer, but Joel raised his gun until it aligned with her face.

"Do I look like I'm infected?" She asked, tone defiant.

"Show us your arm." Joel demanded.

Ellie rolled up the sleeve of Billie's old hoodie to reveal a scarred bite mark.

"See? It's not getting any worse." She said coolly. Joel's eyes flicked to Tess. "If we're out in the open, why aren't we being swarmed?" She added, causing Billie to suppress a wry smile at the girl's bravado.

"Don't worry about that." Joel said curtly.

Ellie shrugged. "Well, I am."

Tess ignored her. "What was Marlene doing with an infected kid?"

"I'm not infected." Ellie's gaze found Billie's, searching for understanding.

"If she was, she'd be tearing our heads off right now." Billie said, earning a small, appreciative smile from Ellie.

"She found me after I was bitten." Ellie explained, eyes narrowing in frustration at their skepticism.

Joel's brows knitted together. "And she didn't shoot you?"
