The trio trudged along for another hour, with Billie and Ellie drifting into easy conversation. Joel kept a measured distance but listened quietly as they spoke.

"Holy shit." Ellie suddenly exclaimed; her gaze fixed on something enormous sprawled across a nearby field.

Billie followed her line of sight. A massive, rusting airplane lay wrecked and decaying amid the overgrown grass.

"I've never seen a plane up close before." Ellie breathed; her eyes wide with awe. "Joel, did you ever fly in one?"

"A few times, yeah." Joel replied, his tone cautious as he scanned the area.

Billie's eyes lit up. "Really? What was it like?"

Joel shrugged, though he couldn't suppress a faint smile at the memory. "You're squished between strangers, paying twelve bucks for a lousy sandwich. Didn't feel so special back then."

"Dude, you got to go up into the sky." Ellie marveled, shaking her head. "I'd kill for that."

"I would too." Billie added with a sigh. "Just to feel what it was like to fly. To go somewhere new, you know?"

Joel gave a wry smile, but his voice was flat as he continued, "Well, they did. And look where it got them."

"Grim." Ellie muttered, the awe in her voice replaced by a somber tone. She turned back to the wreckage, her wonder mingling with a new layer of sadness.

They resumed their journey, Joel leading them through the uneven, silent countryside. Billie watched the silent exchange between Joel and Ellie and felt a pang of jealousy. Joel had always dodged her questions about the old world, quick to shut down any curiosity with a curt 'Let's not dwell on it.' But here he was, humoring Ellie, sharing parts of himself that had always felt locked away to Billie.

She shook off the thought, telling herself she was being silly.

"Let's cut across the woods here." Joel instructed after a while, pausing near a bend in the road.
