They had escaped the horrors of the university, but not without cost. All three were packed onto a single horse, its strides jerky under the weight.

Ellie kept glancing back, her face tight with fear as if their pursuers might appear at any moment. Billie tried to steady her, reaching over and giving her hand a firm squeeze.

But Billie's worry was fixed on someone else. Her father was slumped against the horse, his breathing uneven, blood seeping from his side with each shallow inhale. He needed help, real help, the kind neither she nor Ellie could give him.

"They're not following us." Ellie murmured, her voice trembling. "I think we're safe."

Billie glanced down at her father, noting how his body sagged further with every passing second. "Dad? Are you okay?"

He didn't respond. Instead, he slipped from the horse, collapsing onto the frigid iron train tracks below with a sickening thud. Both girls scrambled down after him.

"Shit!" Ellie gasped, grabbing his hands and pressing them over the wound, desperate to staunch the bleeding. "Joel, open your eyes! Please, you've gotta get up."

Billie's heart wrenched as she saw the tears welling in Ellie's eyes. "I can't fuckin' do this without you."

Forcing down her own fear, Billie steadied herself. Her father lay in front of her, looking so helpless, so small in a way she'd never seen before. It was too real. He was slipping away.

"Ellie." She spoke firmly, pulling Ellie's face to hers. "We need to get him on the horse. Now."

Ellie was still staring at Joel, her eyes glazed, distant. Desperation flared in Billie's voice as she shouted, "Ellie!"

Finally, Ellie looked up.

"We need to get him to shelter, a house, a building, anything with supplies. This cold's only making it worse." Billie said, hands pressing against Ellie's cheeks to keep her focus. "You understand?"

Ellie's nod was faint but steady. "Good. Now help me."

Together, they heaved Joel off the ground, his sharp intake of breath signaling the agony of each movement. They somehow managed to get him back onto the horse, positioning him so the horse's flank braced his wound.
