"Utahime"

She turns abruptly towards Gojo, producing a loud pop sound when she pulls the lolly ice cream out of her mouth. "Hmm?"

Gojo chuckles at her complex response. He kicks the sand at his feet. Wave slapping over the shore, barely reaching them

"Have you heard of the myth about a sailor and a mermaid?"

"Suddenly?", she archs an eyebrow. Whatever with him. "No", and she bites on her ice cream afterwards. Utahime twirls around completely, striding backwards as she faces Gojo. "Tell me about it"

He smiles and gladly begins to tell

"The myth says mermaids were incredibly beautiful but a distrusting creature. Many humans fell in love with them, but just as many only fell for their looks. So every time they met someone who claimed to love them, they often tested their loyalties"

"How?"

"The famous story tells that there was a young sailor who fell in love with a mermaid who washed up on the shore. Just like other mermaids, she wanted to test his love. His mere words of love alone were never enough for her because to mermaids, human words were meaningless.

So the mermaid asked the sailor to live with her in the ocean if he truly loved her. So the sailor followed her, deeper and deeper into the ocean until they reached a place where he couldn't breathe. The sailor was far discerned that he couldn't breathe under water, but he still followed the mermaid to his death, proving his love for her.

Believing that he would start breathing again if he was taken out of the water, the mermaid pulled the sailor to a rock, but he simply sank back into the ocean. In the end, he returned to the mermaid's world where she wished him to be. But he wasn't in a place where the mermaid could be with him", he finishes

"How foolish", she utters absent-mindedly. Her tone is between sad or disappointed. "He knew he wouldn't survive if he did that"

"Yeah, I guess he was a fool. Or maybe..", he pauses. ".. he just loved the mermaid so much that he was willing to drown"

Utahime sighs. "Humans should know where they supposed to be. We do not belong somewhere else other than here. We can only love someone with the same natures. Humans with humans. Mermaids with mermaids. Strongs with strongs, and weaks with weaks. We should not cross the boundaries", she says

"You think so?", Gojo smiles faintly at Utahime

A beach ball rolls over to their feet. Utahime bends on her knees to pick it up and throws it back to the kids. They smile at her and Gojo, waving a thank you

"Why are you telling me this, Gojo?", and they proceed to walk. Now side by side

'Maybe because you remind me of the mermaids', he shrugs

"Maybe because we are at the beach", but he ends up saying something completely different from his mind. "It's a famous tale, I'm surprised you never heard of it, Utahime"

"I am more surprised that you are into such fairytales", she chuckles

Gojo puffs his cheeks

"Anyway, what's your take on the mermaid?", He is curious to know

Utahime just called the sailor a fool just now. What does she think about the mermaid?

"Traitor", she utters. "She wasn't supposed to betray his love like that. Although they are different, maybe - just maybe - if they tried, they could actually be together"

"And if she still chose to never love humans because of her nature to hate on their kinds, she could just tell it directly to them. 'You filthy humans are unworthy and disloyal, get out of my face! I will never love someone like you!' - something like that, instead of making him drown", she admits bitterly

Gojo throws his head back, laughing out loud when Utahime includes dialogue in her telling. Her intonations, her expressions and body languages are on point. What an actress

"Utahime, if I tell you that I love you, will you test my loyalty and tell me to drown?", he asks

"No", brief. "Cause you'll never love me. I am no mermaid"

Gojo nods his head

"But if I tell you to really drown yourself to death, will you actually do it?", this time, she asks

"No", Gojo shakes his head. "Cause you'll never ask me to do something like that"

"Well, you're not wrong. I guess we both know each other so well. None of us would do such stupid things"

Utahime is right and she is also wrong. She doesn't know how much Gojo loves her

He loves her enough that he is willing to drown although she doesn't tell him to. He loves her so much that he can hardly breathe whenever he is with her. Sometimes he loves her so much that he becomes a bumbling fool

It's probably because she doesn't know how he feels about her, and he never wanted her to know. Or perhaps it's because she doesn't love him at all

The strongs belong with the strongs, and weaks belong with the weaks. We should not cross the boundaries - she said

"Utahime"

"Hmm?"

"Are we.. that different? Are we so different that we don't belong together?"

"Well, I think we are"

"But you're not weak", he squeezes his hand with the other. "You are not weak, Utahime"

"I know", she muffles a laugh

"Gojo"

"Hmm?"

"I was just thinking.. that I might go against my words and actually betray you. One day, I might want to test you, or even ask you to drown yourself and prove your loyalty to me"

Gojo purses his lips. "Fair enough"

Utahime frowns at him. "You think it's fair?"

"I too have the same thought as you. That I might capable to love you, Utahime"

She chuckles faintly. "Can you?"

"Yeah.. to fall in love with someone like you is not stupid like you said. You are no mermaid, true. Because you never did all those terrible things. You just have to be you for someone to fall in love. And.. and you're beautiful", he tells and then shies away

"Wow. That is the sweetest thing you ever said to me, Satoru", Utahime blushes

"I can die happy"

[NOTE : "I can die happy" is a way to say "I love you too" in Japanese. It is also a response to "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" phrase ♡]
