"He was probably joking anyways.." You hoped he wasn't.
"He seemed pretty serious to me." Your friend groaned, leaning back in the worn down armchair that resided on the far side of your room, a small window to its right that overlooked the castle grounds.
"But that's the thing, I can never tell with him," you run a hand through your hair, debating on whether or not you even really want to go. "Can you even really call it a date?" You mumbled to yourself.
"Well, you'll never know unless you show up!" She turns to you, a knowing look on her face. "You know you want to~"
Your friend was right. Maybe a teeny tiny part of you really did want to see him, to go on a date with Mattheo. But another part, the more logical one, prepared you for disappointment.
One date.. you let out a withheld sigh. Going on one date couldn't possibly be that bad.
You turned to your friend, a small smile forming on your face as you spoke, "I need you to help me pick an outfit then."
By the time you were ready to head out, your room held the scents of an array of perfumes, one having been chosen as "absolutely lovely." Not to mention the fact that your floor was now enveloped in a sea of colourful jumpers, dresses, and jackets, various pairs of trousers had also been scattered about here and there. You had, however, found a particularly nice yellow dress, which you were now wearing, amongst the chaos of clothes.
Your eye catches the time as you head for the door, a blush creeping onto your face as you realise you're going to be late. Hugging your friend goodbye, you hurriedly head towards the black lake, nerves mixed with excitement arising in your chest.
The walk there was longer than you'd have liked, the winding paths of the castle slowing your course. You began to wonder why Mattheo had chosen to meet here of all places, the banks of the lake were never particularly popular amongst students at Hogwarts, perhaps it was the idea that something sinister lay beneath the surface that put people off. Yet, as your eyes met the shimmer of the dark crystal water, you didn't feel uneasy. The soft ripples and reflections reminded you of a late night sky, unknown yet serene in their depth
You were relieved that he wasn't waiting when you got there, never relishing in the idea of "fashionably late," although as the seconds turned to minutes, you began to wonder where exactly he was.
You sat amongst swaying grass blades, watching the surface of the lake, waiting. Sounds of quidditch practice echoed in the distance, squabbles between teammates as they scampered to snatch the most points. Though, even those sounds died down to silence as the sky grew paler and evening set in. He still wasn't there.
"Maybe it was a dare," you thought, twiddling a daisy between your fingers.
"He seemed nervous when he asked, though.." remembering the slight shake to his voice and his attempt to cover it with a laugh.
The daisy that had sat between your fingers lay petal-less on the ground, an empty stem amongst the white flakes as you started picking at another.
"To stay or to go?" You whispered, standing up in defeat.
You had made it around halfway back to the castle when you heard a shout ring out from your right, not taking too much notice as you climbed a few steps on your way.
"Y/N"
You paused.
"Y/N WAIT"
Surely not. No one in their right mind would even-
"STOP WALKING OFF, HEY!"
You stopped now. The sound of footsteps crunching on leaves grew closer, soon followed by a few gasps for breath.
"I'm so sorry. i -"
"Forgot?" You interrupted, keeping your tone calm.
"I got called in by Flitwick, he cornered me," he rushed out, straightening his tie as he met your eyes.
"I waited for you, Mattheo." Your voice betrayed you, disappointment laced within your words as you spoke, "I'm going back to my dorm."
With that, he reached for your hand, walking beside you as you went, "I'll come with you, let me make it up to you, please?"
Hesitation dictating your thoughts before you cast it aside, "Fine, but if you're late like that next time, I'm not waiting."
"So there's going to be a next time?" He smiled at that, a soft chuckle leaving his lips at your exasperated expression.
Despite the delay, your evening was surprisingly pleasant once you had settled in your dorm room, a calmly flowing conversation present throughout the duration of it.
Between a song of apologies for his late arrival, mixed between inappropriate jokes and oddly entertaining anecdotes, you found yourself to be enjoying Mattheos company. He was sweet and seemed to feel rather guilty about earlier events. So, as he leaned against the frame of your window, flicking the ash of his cigarette to the ground outside, you found yourself smiling. You didn't mind this. Him.
"Mattheo, if you want -" you thought for a second, finding the right thing to say before you continued, "If you want, you can come over again tomorrow?"
He paused, turning to look at you before walking over. "Tomorrow?"
"Mhm."
Standing in front of you as you sat on your bed, you had to tilt your head to meet his gaze.
"I can do tomorrow,"
You couldn't help but blush as he leaned down towards you, realising just how close he really was. His eyes, like the deepest mahogany, never broke away from yours, encapturing you.
"Do you want me to stay tonight?" He whispered, voice soft and curious.
Glancing down to his lips before returning to the warmth of his eyes, you nodded, "I'd like that."
In a moment of bravery, perhaps due to the adrenaline caused by his close proximity to your own self, you found your fingers wrapped around the fabric of his tie, the silvery emerald material smooth against your fingertips. He looked down at you now with a different emotion, intrigue.
Yet, you took little notice of his change in demeanour, as with a soft pull to the fabric around his neck, you felt his lips against your own. It was slow, and gentle in numerous ways, perhaps most of all because he was afraid he would break you, or maybe it was because you were afraid you'd grow addicted if you were not to proceed with caution.
All you knew was, even with a small taste of him, you were already hooked on Mattheo, and there wasn't much you'd be able to do about it if he had a say in it.
