The next day arrived and they had arrived at school. It was pretty silent as they walked through the halls. They passed a room and heard quiet sobs. They paused and looked at the door to the storage closet. "Is someone crying?" El whispered. "Yea, I think so." Dustin said. "Wanna go and check it out?" Max said. They slowly opened the door, it creaked as they did, and it revealed Will who had his head on his knees.
"Will..?" Lucas said. Will looked up at them, frightened. "Please go." He mumbled. They barely got a word out. "Hey.. are you okay." Max said. She sat next to him and tried to comfort him. Max looked up to see the party confused. Mike gave her an angry glance but she ignored it. She rolled her eyes at Mike and put her hand on his back. She thought about what Jim said the other day. What if he was like this for a reason. As Will finally quieted down, he looked at them and stood up, leaving them in the room.
"I told you, Max. He doesn't care. We should just stop trying to help him." Mike said. "Mike, he could be like this for a reason." She said. Mike sighed, "you're sounding like hopper now." She said.
As lunch started, they walked to their table. They talked until they heard yelling. Yelling from Troy. They quickly walked out of the cafeteria and walked around until they peeked around the corner to see Will and Troy. "You're nothing but a pathetic-" Troy said before being punched in the face by Will. His head bounced off the ground and his nose bled. A few students yelled "School fight!" And everyone gathered. The teachers eventually came and pulled them apart. It was clear that Will won and Troy dramatically lost. "I'll tell everyone!" Troy said to Will as a teacher pulled him away. Will was silent.
They sat in class with silence. Mike and Will sat across the room from each other. Mike looked at Will, he looked nervous. The bell finally rung for the end of the day and the class raced out. Will rushed home with tears running down his face. He ran into his room and slammed the door shut while plummeting onto his bed. Joyce and Jonathan hadn't arrived home yet so he was alone. A couple hours past and he heard a gentle knock. "Will, can I come in." Joyce asked. "Fine!" Will called out. Joyce walked in. "Do you want to come out and hangout with the other kids." She said. "No."
"What's wrong?" She asked while sitting on his bed. "I can't hangout with them." He said. "Why can't you?" She questioned. "Because I don't want to get attached. I don't want them to find out." He said. "Will, those kids seem like they'll really support you. They seem really caring and you could tell them-" She said before she was interrupted by Will. "I can't just tell them, mum. It's not that easy. You don't understand. Get out!" He yelled. Joyce put her hand on his shoulder. "Will-"
"Get out!" He called again and she sighed while walking out. Before she was fully out the doorwnt she spoke "when you're ready, you can come out with no we're not." She said.
"He isn't ready yet?" Hopper asked.
"Yea.." she said. "I can try to talk to him." He said. "Really?" She said. He nodded. They hugged and he walked to Wills room, knocking on his door. He heard him call out "come in!" From inside of the room. (Hopper doesn't know Wills secret)."Hey, Will." Hopper said. Will sighed when seeing Hopper. "I just want to tell you that those kids out there have been caring about you deeply. They've been trying to talk to you but you seem to ignore them. Why is that?" Hopper said. Will looked at him to see a caring expression. "I don't want them to it find out and then make fun of me." He said.
"Well, there's one thing I can tell you. Those kids out there are the most supporting, kind, and caring kids you'd ever meet. No matter what your secret is there's noway they won't like you." He said. Will got up and softly smiled at him. "Really?" Will softly said. "Really." Hopper said. Will thought of a second and slowly got up. He walked out nervously and saw the party talking. He turned to Joyce to see her with the biggest smile on her face. "You did it!" She said, hugging hopper as he hugged back.
Joyce grabbed the phone and spoke. "Hello, this is the Byers residence!" She said.
"Hello Joyce. I'm sorry to say but your son is expelled." A woman informed. "What, why?" She exclaimed. Will was a good kid and never caused much drama. "Will punched a kid. Some kids read his diary and they found out he was.." She paused. "..gay." She said with a whisper. "After the kid told everyone about it, he punched Will which made Will punch back."
"What's wrong with that and are those other kids getting expelled?"
"No, only because those kids aren't.. like Will." She spoke. "What do you mean "like Will"?"
"Well Wills just.. different. We don't want to set a bad example for the younger kids in this school."
"So you're telling me you expelled my son and not those other kids because he's gay? What is wrong with this school. You know what? Fine, we don't need to be in some homophobic school anyways!"
Ever since then he's been purposely getting expelled so he doesn't have to deal with the kids finding out.
That was when his secret was first exposed. Will hadn't been the same since, but Joyce seeing Will and the kids having fun made her think it was all gonna change.
El walked up to Will and sat next to him. "Hi." She said. "Hi." He replied.
Will hoped he could make friends with them even though they had a rocky start.
