The two of us start doing research the next day. Going though mountains of files about human needs and wants. Honestly it's quite overwhelming, I've never met a human before, other than dad, and I didn't have to take care of him, so I'm completely new to this. Jules-Albert remembers some stuff from when my dad was alive, but he's my mom's family's familiar so he and my father didn't really interact.
I had no idea human's we're so high maintenance. They have to eat at least twice a day, every day, and it has to be different things or else they get bored. It's absurd. I only eat once a week, and Jules doesn't eat at all and we're perfectly fine, but I said I'd take good care of the human we pick so I guess we can deal with the cost of food.
My mother's gambling habits completely used up the family fortune, but by selling things around the house we've made ourselves a good amount of money.
Besides food, apparently humans also need interesting things to keep their tiny little brains from rotting. I don't really know what humans find fun, but I grabbed a bunch of books from dad's old room. Hopefully that's good enough.
It's almost 3 in the morning now and I'm still down in the study, a large pile of scrolls and books around me. Anouther thing the myths get wrong; I hate staying up late.
This human better appreciate the hours of sleep I'm losing to keep them happy.
I look out the window next to me. It's dark outside (obviously), but on the horizon I can just barely make out the lights and buildings from the city. It's not like it's hard to get there, it's only a couple minutes away if I drive, I've simply never had a reason to go. I'm curious though. Having spent so much time studying humans lately, I think I've caught a bit of an obsession.
"Hey Jules," I start, turning from the window to face him. He looks up from his book, his eyes red and tired from late night reading.
"I'm going to go to the city and buy some human food."
I stand up and grab my jacket watching him nod drowsily from the corner of my eye. As I'm about to walk out he finally seems to grasp what I'd said.
"Sir! My apologies but that is an idiotic idea! The city is full of cruel and heartless humans! you'll be killed immediately! You know how much they hate your kind."
I laugh at the last part. Hundreds of people I don't even know hate me so much they'd kill me on sight. It's kind of endearing, in a terrifying, very likely to get me killed kind of way.
"I'll be fine. I'll cover up with a hoodie. Besides I'm just going to get some food, not start a war" I smile as he goes back to his reading his book, a clear sign I'm allowed to go.
"I'll be back soon" I walk out the door and over to one of dad's many vintage cars, an old red Ford with peeling paint from my neglect over the years. Its been awhile since I've driven but with my father, being a car collector, taught me how to drive very young and it's stuck with me.
I've only wrecked seven of the ten cars I've used. Well. Eight, but still.
The engine starts up with a loud sputter, and I begin to make my way towards the city lights in the distance. The closer I get the louder the sounds become, sounds of cars and horns, yelling and advertising and a bunch of sounds I've never heard before.
It is so overwhelming that I almost let go of the wheel to cover my ears. Then, slowly, I get used to the ruckus and it becomes an almost peaceful buzz in the back of my mind.
