THE FIRST THING CASEY NOTICES is the small blonde girl. She's much shorter than Casey, probably only up to Casey's stomach. She has messy blonde hair in loose curls and she wears the same uniform as Casey does, though this girl's is significantly bigger on her; her t-shirt nearly swallows her whole and she's practically standing on her leggings. She wears a white jacket similar to Casey's – she'd noticed a white jacket on her bed a few days ago, the number twelve sewed onto the left arm, just below the shoulder – though the number on her sleeve clearly reads '13'. Her jacket sleeves extend long past her arms, Casey assumes as she can't tell where the girl's arms even end inside the jacket. Even Casey's sleeves are too long. The girl has too pale skin and she seems thinner than Casey.

"Hello." Casey clears her throat before she speaks, catching the girl's attention. She flinches, which gives Casey an odd feeling, and whips around, her golden locks trailing behind her. Casey utters a bashful apology, keeping the word under her breath, hoping her face is enough to tell the girl that she's sorry.

"Hello," the girl repeats, her voice is quiet and laced in an accent Casey can't place.

Casey nearly smiles. "I'm Casey." She wants to tell someone her name, it'll make it more than just a word she knows because it'll be her, officially. At least in the eyes of this girl.

"Everley." The girl – Everley – replies with a tiny, hardly noticeable smile.

The short conversation is brought to a close as Doctor Hargreaves enters the room, a soldier following behind, for another day of training. Today's object, or objects it seems, is a cluster of paper. She isn't sure if they're all blank, but the top piece is, she notices as it's placed on the table by Doctor Hargreaves, followed by a ruler at the other end by the soldier.

Casey tries not to focus on what Everley is doing, presuming she'll be doing something similar, and creates a portal with ease. It appears beside the table and Casey grabs a handful of papers, tossing them carelessly through the centre of the portal. It takes the papers into itself and disappears, appearing shortly after at the other side of the room. Casey turns to her left, watching as every single piece of paper floats to the floor, not a single mark on any of them.

By her fifteen-minute break, Casey is severely exhausted. She's been pushed further than usual today, seeing how they need her to master her portals sooner rather than later. She isn't sure why, she just knows that's what they need. Casey doesn't mind this; she'd like to master her portals sooner, too. She doesn't know what she'll be able to do with them when she does, but she doesn't particularly care, she just wants to be able to do something other than lose over and over again.
