CHAPTER
9
Way over Upstate New York there is Greenberg County. The city of
Eldorsen
serves as both the county seat and the largest municipality in the county.
Eldorsen
holds this distinguished trait because it is home to the Greenberg County Correctional Facility, the largest state-run prison in Upstate. The prison employs more than a quarter of the town's residents, many of whose ancestors had also worked in the prison.
On
morning
the guards were doing their rounds, waking up the inmates and doing a roll call. It was business as usual. He came to the cell occupied by Roland Bower and Zach
Osben
. Both men were serving life sentences for murder, neither of them had the chance of getting a parole. The guard banged his nightstick on the bars of the cell. "Bower!
Osben
! On
you
feet! On the double!!" There was no response. The guard did not have keys to the cell, so he reached in and pushed the bed sheets off with his nightstick. He uncovered realistic –looking paper mâché replicas of the two inmates. A couple of pillows under the blankets simulated the inmates' bodies.
The guard's face went pale. He rushed out and reported this to his superiors. The alarm was
pulled
and the prison went into lockdown. The warden ordered a headcount of
the all
the
inmates. Aside from Bower and
Osben
, everyone else was accounted for. The warden then turned his attention to the prison employees to make sure they were accounted for. They all were, save for one: Nicole
Rellick
. The warden sighed. "
Of course
it's her!"
Cops were sent to
Rellick's
house. They found the front door unlocked so they went it. She was not there. Neither was her husband, Carl, but his phone and wallet were still there. Soon Governor Anna
Wilkers
sent out a State of Emergency and dispatched the New York State Police, the National Guard, and other law enforcement agencies to conduct
a manhunt
on Bower,
Osben
, and Nicole
Rellick
.
Amy and her husband were in their apartment when their phones were buzzing with notifications about the prison escape. They turned on the tv news. Camera crews were gathered at the prison. "Governor
Wilker
is expected to be here soon on her way from Albany" said one anchor. As some preliminary details of the escape were being reported on, Amy and her husband looked at each other.
