please do not sexualise halle's character and archie, they're supposed to be 16 when they first meet, then 17 when they see each other again after archie met horatio hornblower for the first time, all three dealing with abusive persons around them.
After that, Archie was kept captive alone, for three years in Spain and was left with a particular emotional wound, leaving him bitter and making him dread his existence, much like Halle's character, a free working-girl, who, after spending her late teens trying to teach, would be suspected to be a psy luring her students in favour of liberty instead of the tyranny of slavery. She would also feel traumatized after her capture by the Spanish, then in the French West Indies, where she learnt both languages a little. All that happened before she was miraculously protected by Horatio when she was nineteen, while also being kept captive, but with him near, in Guadeloupe, a French colony, where Horatio and his crew had a mission but they ended up being sent to prison.
