Ace Montgomery stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his luxurious penthouse, staring out at the city below. The distant lights blurred into a sea of twinkling stars, a stark contrast to the darkness that lingered within him. He had always prided himself on his ability to remain emotionally detached, but lately, that facade was beginning to crack.
Ever since Maya had become his assistant, he found himself inexplicably drawn to her. Her infectious optimism and warm heart were like a ray of sunlight trying to penetrate the icy fortress he had built around himself. But he couldn't allow himself to get close to her, to anyone, for that matter. Love was nothing but a cruel illusion, and he had seen firsthand the devastating consequences it could bring.
As he sipped on his scotch, his mind wandered back to the meeting earlier that day with his family's attorneys. The stipulations of his late grandfather's will had been a thorn in his side for years. One of the conditions was that he must marry by the age of thirty-five, or the control of Montgomery Enterprises would be passed to the board of directors.
With his thirty-fifth birthday just six months away, the pressure was mounting. He couldn't fathom the idea of a loveless marriage, a union that would be nothing more than a business arrangement. Yet, it seemed like fate had other plans for him, plans that he couldn't escape.
Maya's voice echoed in his mind as he recalled the conversation they had during the Wagner Industries deal. There was something about her, something that made him question the impenetrable walls he had constructed around his heart.
He shook his head, trying to push away the thoughts that threatened to consume him. Relationships were a weakness, and he couldn't afford to be weak. But even as he tried to convince himself of his own strength, he couldn't shake the feeling that Maya was slowly chipping away at the ice around his heart.
The next morning, as Maya entered Ace's office, she found him staring intently at a stack of legal documents. His usually immaculate appearance seemed slightly disheveled, and she wondered what might be troubling him. "Mr. Montgomery, I have the information you requested for the upcoming board meeting," she said, setting a folder on his desk.
He glanced up at her, and for a moment, their eyes met, a silent understanding passing between them. There was something unspoken, a connection that neither of them could deny.
"Maya, sit down," he said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it before. Nervously, she took a seat across from him, her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn't shake the feeling that something significant was about to happen.
"Maya, I need to talk to you about something important," he began, his gaze steady.
She nodded, waiting for him to continue. "As you know, my grandfather's will stipulates that I must marry by my thirty-fifth birthday," he said, his expression serious.
Maya's eyes widened in surprise. She had heard rumors about the will, but she never thought it would become a reality. "I never believed in love, Maya," he confessed, his voice tinged with vulnerability. "But I can't ignore the connection between us."
Her heart skipped a beat, but she forced herself to remain composed. She couldn't allow herself to get swept away by his words.
"What are you saying, Mr. Montgomery?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I'm saying that fate seems to have a different plan for us," he replied, his gaze unwavering. "I want you to marry me, Maya."
Her eyes widened in shock, and her heart raced. This was beyond anything she had ever imagined. A part of her wanted to say yes, to give in to the feelings she had been suppressing for so long. But another part of her was afraid of the consequences, afraid of getting hurt again.
"I... I don't know, Mr. Montgomery," she stammered, struggling to find the right words. "Please, just think about it," he said, reaching across the desk to gently touch her hand. "I don't want a loveless marriage, Maya. I want something real, something with you."
Their eyes locked, and in that moment, all the walls Maya had built around her heart seemed to crumble. She saw the vulnerability in his eyes, the same vulnerability she had been hiding within herself.
"I'll think about it," she finally whispered, her heart torn between fear and desire.
With that, she stood up, her mind swirling with conflicting emotions, and left his office. As she walked back to her desk, she couldn't help but wonder if fate had indeed bound them together, or if the price of their love would be too high to bear.
