The weeks leading up to the wedding were a whirlwind of preparations and emotions for Maya. The once professional boundary between her and Ace had begun to blur as they navigated their new roles as an engaged couple. Despite the initial excitement of taking this leap together, doubts and uncertainties lingered in the corners of her mind.

As the day of the wedding drew nearer, Maya found herself seeking moments of solitude to gather her thoughts. One evening, she stood on the balcony of her apartment, gazing at the stars and seeking solace in their distant beauty. The gentle breeze caressed her face, offering a fleeting sense of comfort.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening behind her. Turning around, she saw Ace step out onto the balcony, his usually composed demeanor faltering as he looked at her.

"Maya," he began, his voice tinged with uncertainty, "are you having second thoughts about the wedding?"She hesitated for a moment, contemplating her words carefully. "I... I just need some time to process everything, Ace. This is a big step for both of us."

He nodded, his expression guarded. "I understand. But we both agreed to this arrangement, and I don't want to be the cause of any unhappiness for you."

Maya felt a pang of sadness in her heart. "Ace, this is not about you. It's about me and my own fears. I want this to work, but I can't help but wonder if you truly believe in the possibility of love."

His face hardened for a moment before he composed himself. "Love is a concept I've learned to dismiss, Maya. I have my reasons for entering into this marriage, but it's not for love."

The raw honesty of his words sent a shiver down Maya's spine. She had hoped that their connection might lead to something more profound, but hearing him confirm his lack of belief in love left her feeling hollow.

"I see," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "So, what are your reasons, Ace?"

He looked away, his jaw tense. "I need an heir, someone who can continue the legacy of Montgomery Enterprises. This arrangement ensures that I have control over my family's empire and prevents it from falling into the wrong hands."

Maya's heart sank as she processed his words. She had hoped for a marriage built on love, a union where they could support and cherish each other. But it seemed that their reasons for marrying were rooted in duty and practicality, rather than matters of the heart.

"I won't lie, Maya," Ace continued, his gaze steady. "I admire your strength and dedication, and I believe you'll be a worthy partner in both business and life. But love, for me, is not part of the equation."

Maya nodded, feeling a mix of disappointment and resignation settle within her. She knew she couldn't force him to feel something he didn't, but it didn't change the ache in her heart.

"Thank you for being honest with me, Ace," she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "I need some time to think about everything. I hope you can understand."He nodded solemnly, and for a moment, Maya saw a flicker of regret in his eyes. But it was quickly replaced by his usual stoic demeanor.

"I'll give you the space you need," he replied. "Just know that I won't back out of our agreement."

With those words, he turned and left the balcony, leaving Maya to grapple with her emotions and the weight of their complicated arrangement. As she stared out at the night sky, she wondered if love could ever find its way into their contract-bound hearts, or if they were destined to be bound by duty and circumstances alone.
