The day had finally arrived for Maya and Ace to meet each other's parents before the grand engagement party. As they stood in the opulent foyer of Ace's mansion, they both felt the weight of the charade they were about to embark upon. The pressure to portray a love that didn't truly exist hung heavy in the air, and Maya couldn't shake the unease that coiled in her stomach.

Ace's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery, were the epitome of high society, their stern and judgmental gazes examining every detail with a scrutinizing eye. Across from them stood Maya's parents, who exuded warmth and genuine affection.

Maya's heart went out to Ace, knowing that this was a particularly difficult moment for him. The distance between him and his parents was evident, and it was clear that the wounds from his past still lingered.

"Maya, darling, come here," her mother beckoned, embracing her in a warm hug. "We're so happy to be here and to meet Ace's parents."

Maya smiled, finding solace in her parents' genuine love and support. Turning to Ace, she saw a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes before he masked it with his usual cool composure.

"Maya, you look lovely," Ace's mother said, her tone reserved.

"Thank you, Mrs. Montgomery," Maya replied with a polite smile.

As they engaged in polite conversation, the need to act in love weighed heavily on both Maya and Ace. They exchanged affectionate glances, held hands with a semblance of intimacy, and even shared a forced smile or two.

Throughout the evening, Maya found herself torn between the act they were putting on for their parents and the desire to break free from the charade. As the night wore on, she stepped onto the terrace to catch a breath of fresh air, hoping to clear her mind and regain her composure.

Moments later, Ace joined her, his footsteps barely audible against the soft murmur of the party behind them.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice low and guarded."I'm fine," Maya replied, looking out at the starlit sky. "It's just a lot to take in, you know?"

He nodded, understanding the weight of the situation they found themselves in. "I know. But we have to maintain the appearance of a loving couple. Our parents' expectations are high."

Maya turned to face him, her heart heavy with the burden of their charade. "Do you ever wonder if we're making the right decision, Ace? This whole arrangement feels so forced, and I can't help but wonder if it's worth it."

His eyes bore into hers, and for a moment, she saw a vulnerability that he rarely let show.

"I have my reasons for doing this, Maya," he said, his voice tinged with something she couldn't quite place. "But I don't want to see you hurt. If at any point you want to back out, I won't hold you to the contract."

Her heart softened at his unexpected concern, but she couldn't deny the confusion that clouded her feelings.

"I don't want to back out, Ace," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want to believe that there's a chance for something real between us, even if it seems unlikely."

Before he could respond, Maya's words were cut short as Ace pulled her into an unexpected kiss. It was a desperate act, a desperate attempt to convince himself—and perhaps her—that their connection was more than just a facade.

The moment was filled with conflicting emotions—surprise, confusion, and an unexpected spark of desire. But as quickly as it happened, the kiss ended, leaving them both breathless and uncertain.

"Forgive me," Ace said, his eyes betraying a mix of regret and something deeper.

Maya's heart raced as she tried to make sense of what had just transpired. It was clear that the kiss had been more than just a charade, but she couldn't allow herself to be fooled by fleeting moments of passion.

"We should go back inside," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "We have a party to attend, after all."

Without another word, they both returned to the party, the unspoken tension between them palpable. The night continued, but the forced smiles and affectionate gestures felt more hollow than ever.

As the night drew to a close, Maya couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. The lines between reality and the charade were blurring, and she couldn't help but fear that their journey together was going to be more tumultuous than she had ever imagined.
