Hastinapur, Nagarasahrya

Arjun's POV

Maa's convulsing digits squeezed mine, as she dimmed her lashes with a cavernous breath, "Arjun, I—" Her lips nibbled between her teeth, a hint of uneasiness washing over her physique firming it over my palm, "Maa?"

"What happened, are you alright?" Grasping her fingers which had dropped frigid, I began to warm it in mine, "You're warm, my goodness!" Pulling the duvet over her, my eyes laid upon her now turned frail ones which were lingering upon me, as if in an urge to convey something; and a tinge of helplessness swirling in those irises.

"I, I am fine Arjun," She sat up straight, her palm roaming across my shoulder, "You first, you first hear me out boy-"

"Of course Maa, what is bothering you tell me!" The way there was slight panic surfacing on her features made my heart clench; what was that, that Maa was so eager to spill out? Did something grave happen?

And for a moment, the scene of her trembling across the balcony flashed in front of my eyes—

Her eyes were strictly glued upon Vasusen, as if she urged to—

"You and Vasusen, loathe each other, Phalgun?" Maa's baritone at oncee turned into a grave, low whisper with her thumb longingly brushing across my knuckles with a squeeze. My brows abruptly knitted at her question, "Maa?"

"Is it?"

That innocent question of hers had years of tales behind it, a short pant escaped as I glanced away being caught off-guard—why, why was she so bothered about Vasusen all of a sudden?

"Maa-that—uh-" Words weren't striking me at that moment, what am I supposed to say?

"It's just that—" My fingers abruptly began to shuffle the tresses fallen across my forehead, as I drew in a deep breath, was Maa bothered upon the fiasco that occurred at the Rangbhoomi?

"It's just that we two didn't go well," I fell silent after a while, my eyes stuck upon the floor with my feet randomly swinging folded over the other in a pinch of restlessness, "I don't know Maa, but I never wanted to loathe him."

And that was true.

Her palm turned vaguely sweaty in my grip as I cupped them in mine, "And I still don't know, why he does. Words slowly into heated arguments, friendly face offs turned duel—Bhrata Duryodhan's company was just the edge forward for him to loathe me—us rather."

Maa glanced away, and a slow gulp down her throat was audible, "Hmmm,"

"But are the things too broken to be mended back, Arjun?" Her voice laced an uncanny urge of plead, "Hmm?"

"I, I don't know—" Those words trailed off in a whisper, suddenly striking me back that why on the first place was Maa so bothered about an unknown man?

Did she knew him from before?

"Whatever happened today," My fingers brushed upon my lips, "I don't know what the future is in store for us...."

"Really?" Kunti Maa bit her lips, her voice quavering all of a while.

"But why, Maa?" I abruptly spun towards her, grabbing her shoulder, "Has, has something happened?"

"Are you worried about my and Vasusen's personal enmity?" My lips curled up into a smile, as I shook my head. Perhaps she was, the way she was reacting—it was evident she might be fearing for me, "Maa, if that is so do not worry about me!"

"I am worried, worried about you both...." Her words inadvertently escaped in an inaudible whisper, but enough for me to decipher. With fingers unexpectedly detaching from mine, she collected her breath, "What?"

She began to shake her head all of a sudden in denial, "No—No! It's nothing Arjun! It's nothing, that—"

"Maa," I turned towards her completely, grabbing her shoulders firmly to soothe, "What is wrong? Come on, tell me!"

"Why are you hiding from your own son?" Smiling vaguely, my fingers perked up against her face, "Did someone say to you something? And Vasusen, why are you so worried about him?"

"Who, who is he to you?"  Maa's eyes abruptly went wide, just a bit too wide then returning to normalcy to swiftly abstract the discomfort, "Who? It's nothing son, I was just worried about you-"

"You have already made enemies since the day you arrived, its not a good sign!" She attempted to smile at me, her thumb tracing my jaw, "I just wanted, that you sort out everything-"

"For the sake of my heart, just—nothing else!" She was lying, I knew she was. But there was something which also told that even if I try my best, I couldn't attempt to extract what exactly was bothering her that moment. There is something, something which was definitely wrong with her; my goodness—why was the scene of her panicking witnessing Vasusen everytime perking up in my mind?

"I do not want you to waver in that lane Arjun, please. Can't you both mend things?" I stared up at her. Why is she so hell bent upon sorting things with me and Vasusen?

What is that, that is eating her mind this gravely?

"I do not want you to indulge in such things, since the day you have stepped into Hastinapur again, dear," She gripped by shoulder in return, meeting her eyes with mine, "Look, things are already dismantled in this Kingdom, and above that—this useless enmity—"

"You're understanding me, right? Please Arjun," Those last words dripped with an urge of plea, "Please, can you?"

Slight worry laced me as I chewed my lips with my eyes fixed on her, "Hmm, I understand you Maa."

I can never allow her to plead her more than once in front of me. Never, if Maa wants this, so shall it be.

"Maa, look, it was never me who chose to bear enmity against him," Breathing in deeply, I crouched below, gradually laying my head on her lap and wrapping an arm around her, "But trust me, I shall never go in the route of something that would bother you anyhow." A smile left my lips as she hummed in response, her fingers tousling against my curls gently; like the ever so before.

"Perhaps, nothing could ever mend between me and Vasusen," I sighed back, dipping my head more with an exhale, "Its like how sky and land cannot co exist....but I promise you Maa, the first attack shall never be from my side."

"Never..."
