"Fuck!!" Nate kicked any rock in his path.

Meanwhile I was off to the side trying not to cry. It felt as though we were doomed. He looked over at me after his own tantrum and hugged me tight.

"It's gonna be okay," he assured me. "Just gotta call Foosh and let him know what's up. He'll probably give us a plan B or somethin'. There wasn't a damn thing we could do about this, okay?"

"Foosh is the last person I'd consider an understanding person," I sniffled. "But do what you do."

I pulled away from him and folded my arms. My eyes met the gas station's cashier who was peeking out his flyer-covered window this entire time, not doing anything at all to help.

"Enjoying the show, asshole?!" I shouted at him then flicked him off. He went back to minding his own business. I turned my attention back to Nate on the phone. Another worry that presented itself into my thoughts was the fact that there was no way for him to charge his phone.

We lost the money, Foosh...

We got robbed at gunpoint...

He was gonna shoot Liv, what do you think I was gonna do?

Well I give a shit! You think I'ma just let her get hurt?

Fuck that! Fuck that, what do you suggest we do now?

Nope...no car, nothin'...

Walk?

Walk fuckin' where?

We're in the middle of nowhere...

What do you mean don't-

Nate slowly lowered the phone from his face, staring at the screen. His eyes are squinted due to the sun reflecting off the bright ground. He looks over at me.

"What did he say," I asked as the hot & dry wind blew the skirt of my dress around.

"He said to start walking," he answered. "To not worry and he'll call us back with a plan. But that we better get to walking."

I looked down at my Keds, knowing they weren't going to survive any long walks but we set out down the road anyway. Along the way, Nate made several attempts to flag down any car willing to pick up a couple hitchhikers but to no avail. We were overheating, sweating, hating everything. The heat irritated us so much that we bickered over the littlest things like walking straight instead of bumping into one another.

"This is bullshit," I complained.

"Yes, I know," Nate snapped. "You know, the whole damn universe knows. Whining about it isn't gonna change the situation."

"Yeah well maybe whining about it makes me feel a little better, do you mind?"

"I won't mind until he calls back with another plan. And he better make it quick. My phone's on 43 percent."

It would be another 45 minutes before Foosh called back and it was only with a small amount of good news. Apparently he was able to help with the car situation. A friend of Evan's will be leaving a car for us parked in a parking lot of a roadside Holiday Inn where he'll be waiting with $550. The bad news is...we have to come up with the other $550 before we meet with Bach.
