"enaged?"
kaila's reaction was nothing like luara had expected. she sounded shocked, of course, but also something else. something luara didn't expect. she sounded almost – upset? coming from her best friend, she didn't want to assume that she wasn't happy for her, but it sounded like that.
"uhm," luara frowned, clearing her throat, "yeah."
kaila glanced back down at luara's ring. luara couldn't tell what she was feeling, especially since she wasn't saying anything.
"are you okay, kaila?" luara asked, leaning back in her seat and twisting the ring on her finger, feeling confused and uncomfortable at her reaction.
kaila huffed, taking a sip of her wine and looking out of the restaurant window. she suddenly looked annoyed, but because of the distant flashes, she figured it was just because of the paparazzi.
kaila didn't answer her question, and luara quirked a brow, "what?"
"why did you do that?" kaila suddenly looked back to luara, anger and disappointment evident in her expression. it surprised luara, taking her back a little.
luara raised her brows, not sure of what to say, "do what?"
"i tell you i went on a date with someone i think i like and you one up me?"
luara didn't know what to say. she didn't even know what she meant. she got engaged before she even knew kaila liked someone, so she didn't understand what point she was trying to make.
"what? i'm not one upping you." luara put her glass of wine down, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"as soon as you found out i was getting into a new relationship after a long time, you decide to get engaged? are you fucking kidding me?"
luara scoffed in disbelief. she didn't think that this would be the reaction she'd get from her best friend. she wasn't entirely angry with her though, mostly for the fact that they were best friends, but she was still angry.
"decide to get engaged? are you fucking kidding me?" luara sat up straight, "i got engaged before i knew about you and whoever you're with."
"so what? you tell me after you find out. rubbing it in my fucking face." kaila shook her head, "you rub every fucking thing in my face. your money, your fame, your voice, your looks, your fucking fiancé."
"how do i? i've never rubbed anything in your face, i've shared it with you. and neymar? you're jealous of neymar?" luara was bewildered. nothing like this had ever come from kaila before, and she definitely wasn't expecting it.
"yes, i'm fucking jealous of you and neymar." kaila exhaled angrily, "you get to have one of the greatest footballers of all time wrapped around your fucking pinky finger, and you take so much advantage from it. i bet you only said yes because of that ring."
luara's jaw dropped. for all she knew, kaila didn't even like neymar, but now, she guessed that she did, "what the fuck?"
"yeah– yeah, luara. i think that he deserves better, i don't think he should be with you. you don't give a shit." kaila took a large sip of her drink, licking her lips as she set it down, "i would. i'd give a shit. i'd go to his games without putting an attitude on. something you don't know how to do."
kaila was raising her voice. so much so that people began to turn their heads. luara was enraged at her words. she'd never felt this angry with her before, but since they were in public, and she didn't want to make a scene, she kept calm, "oh, shut the fuck up, kaila."
"i don't even know how i put up with you, let alone how neymar does. we're better off without you. i don't need you in my life."
luara sucked on her teeth, "kaila, everything you have is because of me. your following? your my friend. your money? money that i gave you. everything you're currently wearing? everything my money fucking bought you, so don't go acting like you can just live without me and take my man while you're at it when i literally bought you your life."
kaila looked back at luara. she didn't seem angry anymore, she looked more embarrassed. serves her fucking right. luara was right. everything that kaila had, luara bought her, or was because of luara. even her copacabana apartment was what luara bought her. otherwise, kaila would still be in the poorest part of rio, wearing hand-me-downs and flip-flops instead of designer clothes and red-bottom heels.
"the only reason you're in this restaurant is because i can afford it, not you. that's also the reason you've been all around the world – because i brought you there, with my money. you and your family would've never got to see brasil play if it wasn't for me." luara fought back a laugh at kaila's defeated expression, "i'm sorry, kaila, but without me, you and your family would still be living in a shitty favela in rio, and not travelling from country to country in my jet, and house to house in fancy cars that my drivers pick you up in."
luara sighed, shrugging her shoulders and taking a sip from her drink, never taking her eyes away from kaila's, which were trying their best to avoid her. luara didn't even feel guilty. what did she expect? did she really expect to talk about her stealing her non-existent spotlight, and deserving her man more than she did and still get to live a life she never would've had if luara didn't have the talent she did?
"so are you gonna say you're sorry for whatever outburst you just had, or pay for this with your empty purse, and fuck off back to where i found you?" luara asked her, staring at her silently, despite the anger she previously felt.
kaila glanced at luara and inhaled, "i'm sorry, lu. i just got upset. i didn't mean it. i'm happy for you."
luara nodded, finishing off her wine, "thank you. i'm happy for you too."
