It started off as a normal day for Cory. He drove to work, ready to supervise another boat tour. He loved the water, but the boat tours were so boring. He couldn't full enjoy the water and keep an eye on passengers to make sure everyone was safe. He rested his arm on the railing keeping the passengers from falling over into the watery depths of the river.
That's when he heard murmurs of a fight. He glanced over to the dock, and there was Dave. Dave was an older chubby man. He did security at the docks. Dave was friendly, and made it his business to learn the names of all the people he worked with, and the passengers.
His memory amazed Cory who even at 16 struggled to remember the names of new people. He needed to get to know a person and use their name a few time before it finally sunk in. Ever since Cory began working at Madison Boat Tours Dave had been looking out for him. He even brought him lunch when Cory was low on money. So to see Dave angrily engaging with a group of men was shocking.
Dave almost never lost his cool. 3 white men stood beside another white man with Khaki shorts. The hot Sun had turned his bare skin pink. They nodded along with the man in Khaki's like henchmen. Dave got more and more frustrated as time went on.
Minutes passed, and by now phones were recording the fight. Cory watched with rapid attention, hoping his friend was okay. Then it happened. The man in khakis threw a punch, and chaos ensued. Dave three his hat up into the air, and hit back.
The man in khakis stumbled back, but his friends hopped on scene quickly taking Dave down. They swung at him, and stomped him while he covered his face, struggling to break free. Cory didn't hesitate after that. He dived into the water pumping his arms and legs in a desperate attempt to reach Dave. Then he felt it.
A swirl of energy around him. The water bubbles around him as he swam closer to the dock.
"Use this power well." He heard a voice barely above a whisper.
He paused looking around, but he saw nothing. He chalked it up to the heat of the moment, and adrenaline. The thought of Dave had him swimming again. He pulled himself onto the dock, and water spilled from his form, but he couldn't focus on that. All he saw was the men hurting someone he cared about.
He ran over grabbing on of the white men, and slammed them down. Black people all around, both people Cory recognized from work, and faces that were unfamiliar poured into he area ready to defend Dave. Something moved in him. A feeling of knowing. This was just the beginning.
With that thought he pushed one of the white men, and 2 black men one old one young, and black girl with locs started jumping the white man. Cory turned and saw one of the other white men grabbing a black lady in a head lock. His arms blocked her breathing, and her arms flailed around, as she struggled to fight back. He ran over, pulled his fist back, and swung. He heard a sick crack, and felt nothing but satisfaction seeing the man go down. Then he moved around the lady gasping for breath, and started swinging.
He landed hit after hit on the man's head. When he felt he had enough he pulled back, feeling smug satisfaction. His breath was heavy, and his heart raced, pumping blood and adrenaline through his body. Cops swarmed in the area, breaking up the rest of the fight, and arresting people.
Cory stared at the scene before him like it was an out of body experience. He glanced at the water and saw heads popping out. He felt energy all around him. Laughter rung through out the air in echos.
"Use this power well." The whisper was back.
"Son!" A hand rested on his shoulders snapped Cory out of his stupor. He glanced around and the voices, and people were gone. The river was empty, except for boats carrying boat passengers.
